In celebration of the first manned Shuttle launch since the Shuttle Columbia accident in February 2003, the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center will air the Space Shuttle Discovery launch on a large projection screen in the Discovery classroom at the museum. The public is invited to join the Future Astronaut Training Program campers, from towns across the country, to watch the Shuttle liftoff. NASA has scheduled the launch for Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at 2:51 p.m. CST.As part of launch day festivities, visitors can make shuttle gliders, pop rockets, and paper rockets on July 13 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. in the Cosmosphere’s large main lobby. At 2 p.m. in the Discovery classroom, Joel Walker, director of education, will offer a Return to Flight briefing to answer questions, reinforce the main goals of the STS-114 mission, and discuss the impact it will have on the space program.
“This mission is good for America,” said Walker. “Space exploration has infinite possibilities and continues to inspire our younger generations to become the engineers and astronauts that will eventually take humans to Mars.”
As with any Shuttle launch, the launch date is tentative until liftoff. NASA has designated July 13–July 31 as possible launch days. Please visit the Cosmosphere’s website at www.cosmo.org to check for updates to the launch time and scheduled events.
There is no charge for watching the launch or participating in the launch day activities. Regular admission prices will apply for the Hall of Space Museum, Dr. Goddard’s Lab, and the IMAX® and Planetarium theaters.
