Here are fuller excerpts Griffin's first address to the NASA on Thursday. Exclusive to cS on the web, I believe, here as a member contribution. GRIFFIN IS SCHEDULED FOR A BRIEFING TODAY FROM 4-5pm eastern ( see www.nasa.gov/ntv , click wmv or real option ). After the excerpts, a couple comments from Dep. Admn. Fred Gregory from Baikonur.

"I'm Mike Griffin. I am the new NASA Administrator. I have the honor to have been nominated by President Bush last month and to be confirmed by the Senate yesterday... [ This was ] probably the fastest confirmation on record... And I am honored by it, and honored for NASA on all of our behalf for the message it sends about the importance that the congress of the United States places on providing leadership for NASA. So I think we all should be gratified
for that.

"The day we lost Columbia was probably the worst day that NASA has had... But out of that came a new vision for NASA, a vision of exploration beyond low earth orbit. Out of that accident came a real rallying around the NASA flag and the nation's flag... to create a new path... to return to the kinds of things that we haven't done for several decades. NASA is the [ agency of the federal government... ] whose reach is the boldest, and which has the longest term effect on what we do as a nation. And I am intensely proud to have been selected to head it, and to assist the President and the executive branch in taking NASA in this new direction.

"Its been a long path to getting here today. Many of you knew me when I was with NASA on one or more of my previous occasions. This will obviously be my last chance to be with the agency [ big smile, audience laughter ] . After this, I can never work in this town again!

"But I'm going to enjoy the next 3 years... [ After the initial issues ] I will be starting a tour of the centers [ as we ] go forward together, really to reshape the agency. It should not come as a surprise to anybody that the agency is in transition. We have not been down the path that we are about to resume for more than 3 decades. We have shaped ourselves to do other things for these last few decades. And now we are on another path."

After Expedition 11's launch, enthusiastic comments from Dep Admn Gregory, "Another one of these beautiful sunrise launches.. And this will be the crew that will actually see the shuttle dock. Its the beginning of the exploration vision." And Gregory said of the international partnership behind the space station, ' You really could say its one of the greatest partnerships in history. ' Gregory had well-wished the crew, giving J Phillips a happy birthday, and commending S Kirkalev's prolific space career.

General Michael Kostelnik, at Baikonur, said KSC has "Discovery out on the launch pad as we speak, [ with ] a very successful tanking test and at the same time bringing along Atlantis very closely behind. So this marks a pivotal time in the agency's human spaceflight program... and then return to assembly [ of Alpha ] in December." Griffin had hints the U.S. could be more self reliant in space ( echoing a point posted on this site, that there'd be greater cost efficiency without CIS ). While Kostelnik left open that a partnership could serve new exploration. Kostelnik said its shaping up to be "an exciting year." In the Baikonur coverage it was mentioned that Discovery's tanking test was "poetically" completed in the same moments that Expedition 11's fuel up began.

I'm sorry I didn't get to transcribing Mike's talk until the weekend. Wish I'd presented the text on Thurs., without other posts, but wasn't able to.

This new administration will likely see the beginning of a new dawn in space. I thought it would be good if a member posted Mike's words, above -- to have them on record here at collectSPACE.
