And legitimately, this is in my coverage area.

An elementary school in Barnegat, NJ will have a science fair all day on Thursday, Feb. 24. On display will be some NASA lunar samples. Having never seen any outside the NASM, I'm intrigued. No mention of any guest speakers, and today's a holiday, but I'll call tomorrow.

I think I may know what they are. We are going to put on a science fair this spring and one of the ladies putting it on is a teacher. She said that certain people can request these samples for displays. She showed me some photos of them. The samples seemed to be small rock fragments and or lunar dirt. They were encased in what seemed to be Plexiglas disks that looked to be about an inch thick and 4 to 6 inches in diameter.

She said these samples were contaminated and that is why NASA encased them in the clear plastic and lets people check them out. She is responsible for their security and had to make special arraignments with the local law enforcement just to qualify to sign these displays out.

Maybe they are something like that.

Mike, everything you
said about the lunar dust in plexiglass is true except they are not contaminated samples. The are encased in plexi glass for their protection. The person responsiblefor getting them was required to take a workshop called "NASA Lunar Rock Certification
Workshop". In New Jersey it's held at NASA ERC,Georgian Court College. The workshop helps put the fear of God in you if anything happens to them. In addition, there is a waiting list for them. They also can tell you when you request them the name of the mission that brought them back.
Hart, let me know the name and location of the school. I've alway been a sucker for a good science fair.

Don't know if it's open to the public, but it's Lillian M. Dunfee School, Barnegat Blvd., Barnegat. Garden State Parkway south to Exit 67 (Route 554), left at end of ramp onto 554, left at Barnegat Blvd. (Wawa on left corner, Rite Aid or similar drug store on right.) It's on the right hand side, just look for the sign.

If you want to call to see if it's open to the public, it's (609) 698-5826.

All times are CT (US)
