Three time flying Shuttle astronaut Pierre Thout visited the Centreville United Methodist Church in Centreville, Virginia this afternoon. The church was holding a two day Space Mission Bible Camp for elementry school children while the Fairfax County Public Schools were on a two day recess. Capt. Thout, who is a graduate of Fairfax High School, gave a lecture about how and why things in space work the way they do, presented a movie, showed the students some samples of space food and joked that if there were a food item onboard that one really liked, that the crewmember should take a few extra color tags ( this is how the food is identified as to which crewmember it belongs to ). Capt. Thuot did a Q & A session afterwords and, in response to one of the questions, said that he was tired at the end of the 14 day STS - 62 mission and that on longer flights that the crew should be given a day of low activity in order to rest, rather than going 16 hours a day from launch until reentry. After the Q & A session Capt. Thuot give the adults present a brief Q & A opportunity. Capt. Thuot also took the time to sign autographs for anyone who wanted to have one. I found the presentation very enjoyable. |

I got to meet Mr. Thout in January of 1992. He did a great talk on the the STS-49 flight. I made a nice trade of 1985 astronaut class pin for a class patch.
