Have digital photos, will upload them to Photobucket and post them here later when I get out of work.

Ellen Baker, John Young and Walter Cronkite (Journalist-in-Space semifinalist) were at the re-opening of the Rocket Park at the Hall of Science in Queens (part of the '64-'65 Worlds Fair.)

Baker, who is the daughter of Claire Schulman, former Queens Borough President, did the talking. She mentioned that growing up she wanted to play baseball for the Yankees because there were no women astronauts at the time. Dunno what Young was there for, as he didn't do any talking (unless he did so at an invite-only lunch.)

No autographs from Young. Baker initially said she didn't want to start a line, then said she would sign for kids only. Talked with the handlers - in a nice way - and they said Young and Baker's agreement was that they would show up and mingle if they didn't sign (although Young didn't mingle either.) Cronkite signed, although he needed help - his handler took the material for him and helped him with it.

Not disappointed with lack of autographs; it was good to meet Young (and how often will I get to do that up this way?) and Baker and Cronkite.

Tony was there, as was Tasha and her adorable son (Alex, right?) In fact, Tony and I were laughing as here's John Young - recognizable as anything even if you've only seen him through his lithos - being ignored by the media as every single camera and every single reporter was enthralled by Alex in the full-size sit-down Mercury capsule replica....

Great recap, Hart! It was nice to see you. Xander had a fabulous time -- got to ask John Young what it was like to fly the LLRV, but could hardly hear his answer. Regardless, he was thrilled to meet him and Ellen Baker, as well as Walter Cronkite (told him, "I know your voice...")

The media attention Alexander got was quite shocking -- he was even interviewed for the news! We'll see if they run it...

Tasha

P.S. Big thanks to CS for posting this event -- we would have completely missed it.

More photos:

John Young (Gemini 3, Gemini 10, Apollo 10, Apollo 16, STS-1, STS-9, Mission 61J CDR) and Ellen Baker (STS-34, STS-50, STS-71). I was hoping Young would sit in the capsule since, aside from the X-15, its the only NASA spacecraft he hasn't flown.

John Young

Ellen Baker

Walter Cronkite, one of the 40 semifinalists for the Mission 61I Journalist-in-Space flight. The final selection of five finalists never took place.

It was good seeing you, Tasha, if I was surprised, never thinking you'd make it all the way down for the day! There's another Women in Aviation program in Windsor Locks in November, NASA astronaut as yet unknown.
