as a part time geologist I am very interested in the Mars landing site geologyI did a slow scan swf video for myself basewd on this morning's NASA/JPL first panorama. I have put it on a web page in case anyone interested in viewing it as well. Although not well distinguished in this first pan image, there appears to be a small hollow (crater?) in the near mid image. May have to wait for alter images. The web page is at :-

Those close marks (the large, flat indentations just clockwise of the verticle axis mark) seem to be the skid marks from the airbags hitting the dust. |

During the last press conference last night, Steve Squyres, Principal Investigator for Spirit and Opportunity, commented on those marks, describing them as shallow craters filled with dust that wasn't blown away during the recent wind storms in the area. He seemed to think they were not created by the bouncing but rather natural features. Of course, he also said that it is far too early to reach any conclusions about anything. |

Exciting !!!
Does anyone already found on any website the exact coordinates of the landing place ?
( So I can mark that place on my 16inch diameter Mars globe ! )

They do not yet know the exact location of the landing -- last night it was joked that a pool had started among the mission managers as to where it would be confirmed. Gusev is at 16 degrees south, 174 degrees east, or so. (Or don't they just count around toward the West?, so it's 186). It's labeled on my own Mars globe.
