Unless specifically visiting just to see the giant 250 ft diameter radio telescope, potential visitors might like to know that the 'old'Visitors Centre is no more having been demolished completely.

The cafe and a small temporary gift shop (mainly cheap plastic rulers, pencils etc)is open along with the planetarium. But no other displays. The Arboretum - featuring the plentary walk is still open.

The charge is £3 (US$4-5) for car parking .

The whole site looks very very forlorn - especially now its winter.

I understand it will be 18 months or so before it reopens but with a much improved Centre.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the info.

I think a new centre is good news. My wife and I visited in June, and while we had a good time playing with some of the hands-on stuff (who said it was meant for kids?) the whole place looked a little tired.

It could use a couple more 'wow' factor exhibits since the return of Dick Gordon's Apollo suit to NASM. The flown Apollo 16 food is a nice item to space nuts like ourselves but a little underwhelming to the general public.

The telescope itself is of course still an impressive sight.

Cheers,
Matt

As a child I can remember going past Jodrell Bank on holiday, and just 2 weeks ago I picked up the book "The story of Jodrell Bank" by Bernard Lovell in a second hand book store.

I look forward to finally going to visit the place when the new visitor centre is opened.
