Hi Friends:The CBS Evening News this evening brought word that President Bush is planning a "major space speech" next week "possibly including a return to the moon and a mission to Mars." Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! Could it be...? Rob |

From Reuters: quote: Buoyed by a successful landing on Mars by a robot explorer, President Bush plans a major announcement on space policy next week that may lead to sending Americans back to the moon, congressional aides said on Thursday.
Skipping ahead... quote: He is expected to propose a new lunar initiative that could lead to a mission to Mars in the long term, said the sources, who asked to remain unidentified.White House officials declined to comment. Bush is scheduled to be in Mexico Monday and Tuesday so any announcement would come after he returns.

A reminder: this policy wasn't just developed by Bush -- it was developed over the last year, beginning with new impetus on February 2, 2003 by a multi-agency review board, including NASA, NOAA, the FAA, the NSF, and the DoD.So this is not just another political announcement. It is the result of months of strategic review -- something that has not been done for NASA since the mid-70s when debates were held over the direction the shuttle would take. Say what you will of how that program (STS) turned out -- but the important thing for this discussion is that it did 'turn out'. Too much time and energy has been spent on this to be just another campaign promise. Whatever shape this plan takes after its announcement, I highly doubt it will go away. NASA is in for a change... |

Probably not during Bush's term[s]. But it may see completion under another administration. To quote Howard Dean (who was speaking about balancing the budget), "I'll do it in the 6th or 7th year of my administration." But iff that's the case then we may never see it.

quote: from the CNN link above: (AP) -- If NASA returns astronauts to the moon and then takes aim at Mars, the agency will have to go back to the drawing board to get the job done. The rockets, equipment and engineers that put American footprints on lunar soil have long been lost, junked or retired.
I'm thinking of investing the $10k for the Apollo LM Panel - Contact Light on E-bay (http://collectspace.com/ubb/Forum14/HTML/000197.html). I may be able to sell it back to the government and make a profit.
