Russia is to confine six cosmonauts in an imitation spacecraft for nearly a year and a half to prepare for a possible manned flight to Mars in 2018, and foreign cosmonauts could be invited to join in.
Russian space authorities have pencilled in 2018 for a possible Mars launch as that year would see a combination of optimum conditions: the two planets would be relatively close, and the sun would be passing through a phase of low activity and radiation ... |

That's great news! I sure would like to see humans walk on Mars in my lifetime. But, considering the Russian economy, their track record with the N1, and with unmanned missions to Mars, I think I'll pass on being a passenger. (like there's a chance of that happening anyway)Noah |

Any idea who will be confined to this mock mission? Real cosmonauts or volunteers? There is a US mock mission currently being staged in arctic Canada with, I believe, six volunteers. |

You mention the Mars simulation in a Hab from which the volunteers can make EVAs in "space/Mars-suits" ... There're 2 projects;
NASA Haughton-Mars Project Base Camp at 75°22'N, 89°41'W on Devon Island, Nunavut, Canadian high Arctic.
Mars Desert Research Station in barren canyonlands of Utah continue to explore the surrounding terrain and analyzing the geology and biology of this fascinating and remarkably Mars-like region.The Russian project will be within the confines of a "Spacecraft" consisting of 3 modules separated by airlocks during 17 months ...
