From the Associated Press:

Son of former NASA official to auction off space memorabilia

On the walls of his southern New Jersey home, the son of a former NASA official has pieces of the space program's history, including an uncashed check for $10.50 written out by Neil Armstrong just before he blasted off into space.

But George Collins thinks his walls would look better with paneling. So Collins, son of the late chief of NASA mission support Hal Collins, planned to auction off his father's space memorabilia Wednesday on the Internet marketplace eBay.

He does not know what the items are worth, and said he does not care.

"I think we're too attached to materialism and possessions that we have," Collins told Gannett New Jersey.

Hal Collins became friends with many astronauts while he was responsible for their training during the 1960s. Many gave him gifts or wrote him letters until his 1973 retirement.

Armstrong realized he owed Hal Collins money the morning he set out to become the first man to walk on the moon. He made out the check and said it should be cashed only if he died in space.

Another item up for auction, an American flag carried into space by the Apollo 12 crew, could fetch $20,000, said private collector Nate Sonnheim of Cherry Hill, who is handling the sale of the items.

Some interesting stuff but have your autopen reference guide to hand; some of this stuff is definitely AP, the signatures on the Apollo 14 lunar sample for a start . No disrespect to the seller (he's clearly not claiming to be an expert) but I'd be wary of taking the lot descriptions as gospel.
Cheers,

George Collins is from my area. The local South Jersey paper (The Courier Post) had the story on the front page. There was a photo of him in his den with all the signed photos on the wall and I was going back-and-forth with my high power magnifier checking for condition. I think I need help. An inside b&w photo shows the Armstrong check that was described. I was wondering since I'm new to ebay, is the collection in one area or scattered all over ebay. I usually just do a search using the word "space" and naturally get 265 pages to go through. Is there a better way!
Thanks

Cliff, space memorabilia is in fact so popular that Ebay has its own section for it:
http://listings.aol.ebay.com/aw/plistings/list/all/category13902/index.html

And it is divided into four smaller sections of Apollo, Shuttle, Other US, and other space.

Thanks for the advice. I've been staying up late every night scrolling through 268 pages of space heaters and parking spaces!!!

There's actually a second category, in addition to the one suggested by Ben:
http://listings.ebay.com/aw/listings/newtoday/all/category14438/index.html

(This one is for space autographs.)

For anyone in the NJ, Pennsylvania area:

The collection described and being sold on ebay will be displayed at the Moorestown Mall on Rt.38 in Mooretown, NJ on May 16-19. George Collins, the owner of the collection, will be on hand Saturday from 10AM to noon to greet the public.

I hope to see it this weekend and I'll give you all a review next week!

All times are CT (US)
