On Monday morning at 10.40am on ITV there is a film called "Countdown" about the race to the moon. Looks good. I'll have to set my video to record it.

Anyone out there seen it?

Is that a 4 part series? There was a series about 10 years ago with the same name which was really great! I still have them all on tape.

It was made in 1968 and reflects that time in tv!.Americans where trying for a very quick moonshot(Russia launched) using a Mercury capsule, as I remember but I was only one at the time!!.

Pretty good film for it's time-featuring a very young James Caan & Robert Duvall. The Lander is a strange Gemini/Lunar Module hybrid! the film's also got some interesting shots in and around the Manned Spacecraft Center of 1967. The book that it's based on is called "The Pilgrim Project" witten by Hank Searls in 1964.
Looks good for it's day.

that Gemini spacecraft with the LM descent stage cracked me up ! Especially when the astronaut had to hang from a pole to get out onto the top of the descent stage. :-)

I've yet to watch it. I had 5, yes I said 5 children to look after today, and there was no way I would be left in peace to watch it so I videoed it. Will let you know my thoughts when I get some free time to watch it!

It was based upon the premise that the man would land and wait for pickup in two years! All the while being supplied by robot supply vessels.
It was fun to watch, because it was so serious back then. Now we laugh.
But you know a similar idea was brought up by Dick Ruttan (Voyager aircraft designed and pilot) about sending a man to Mars. Only he suggested a one way trip and no resupply ships. The idea did not go very far.

Wow-I know Dick is an innovator with some fantastic ideas, but i never heard about that one.
When did this come out and how did he propose to do it??

Well I finally sat down and watched the movie. Really strange senario! I could never imagine NASA sending a man to the moon in the 1960's and making him wait for a year to return! How bizarre. Other than that it was OK. Just OK.
