Space Day is May 2, 2008.
The theme this year is "50 Years of NASA History".
How will you celebrate "Space Day in Your Neighborhood?"

National Air and Space Museum release
quote:
Celebrate Space Day at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum

Visitors of all ages are invited for a galactic adventure at the National Air and Space Museum’s annual Space Day Saturday, May 3, celebrating NASA’s 50th anniversary this year.

Space Day will feature a busy schedule of astronaut appearances; live performances by the award-winning a cappella group The Chromatics; an interactive space quiz; LEGO displays of real and imagined space vehicles by WAMALUG (Washington Metro Area Users Group), NASA and National Air and Space Museum scientists; and tours and stories for children. Among the day’s highlights will be a live contact via amateur radio with the International Space Station at 11:30 a.m. Astronaut Garrett Reisman will be available to answer students' and young visitors' questions for an hour.

Space Day, created in 1997 by Lockheed Martin, is designed to encourage students to consider careers in space exploration as they study math, science, engineering and technology. Lockheed Martin sponsors Space Day events across the United States and Canada, with more than 70 partners and associates, including the National Air and Space Museum and NASA.

Organizations offering activity stations at the museum include NASA, the Northern Virginia Association of Rocketry, Team America Rocketry, AMSAT-Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation and Washington Metro Area Users Group.

The National Air and Space Museum building on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is located at Sixth Street and Independence Avenue S.W. The museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is located in Chantilly, Va., near Washington Dulles International Airport. Both facilities are open daily from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. (Closed Dec. 25) Admission is free, but there is a $12 fee for parking at the Udvar-Hazy Center.

I'll be at the Musuem of Flight in Seattle for Space Day with my astronomy club.

I usually have a table set up with a bunch of free swag, a few photos and a computer running a slideshow of images I've taken.

Shameless Plug:

I have "Celebrating 50 Years of America in Space" patches available and I will be happy to offer them at a discount to any organization participating in Space Day. This way your organization can use them as a fundraiser.

There are several area schools that have organized Space Day activities for their students, but nothing directly by the way of a public celebration.

That said, while not directly related to Space Day, on May 5, Tom Jones will be speaking at The Houston Museum of Natural Science as part of their Distinguished Lecture series.

Just got the fax, and since I'm the education reporter for the Toms River-area schools, I'm covering it:

Washington Street Elementary School will join more than 500 other schools around the world by signing Student Signatures in Space posters to celebrate Space Day 2008.

The release goes on to say that STS-126 has been tentatively designated to carry the signatures. Unfortunately, no NJ-astronauts on that mission, although Ferguson was born in Philadelphia.

I'll be at the SWOF Museum in Titusville to unveil the painting I donated to their auction last year.

It is a 24" x 48" acrylic on stretched canvas. Titled "Past is Prologue" it celebrates the entire 50 year history of US space exploration.

The winning bidder is in town to attend the HOF Induction so we decided to do this now.

I'll post pictures and more next week.

Thank you to everyone who came to the San Diego Air & Space Museum's Space Day event at the weekend. We had over 900 people - doubling last year's attendance - presentations from local and national space organizations, and two talks by space station commander Bill Shepherd, who also held an autograph session and signed hundreds of photos for attendees. Looking forward to an even better event next year!

Hi Francis-

Did anyone ask him about that Exp 1 patch? I've seen it before. It's almost like a "negative" of the one they wore on their Sokols.

Not that I heard... while the space enthusiast would have got a lot out of this event, the day was really aimed at general family audiences to get them inspired and enthused about space, science and technology in general, so I doubt there were many there who would know such a detailed specific.
