As a collector of Carl Swanson/Spaceflight covers I'm interested in a couple to do with John Glenn's flight that I don't have, and have never seem images of. Can anyone shed any light on what I believe are:
  • S024 Mercury 6 Splashdown (20/02/62)
  • S025 and S026 John Glenn day (21/02/62)
S022 through S024 are for Glenn's launch and come in various covers all of which I have images of, so just interested in the above three.

My understanding of the numbering may be off so any help with Swanson/Spacecraft covers that came between Glenn's launch on 20/02/62 and OSO on 07/03/62, which I believe to be S027, would be appreciated.

Space Craft Covers produced three versions of the Swanson cachet for Glenn's flight — the basic cachet is the same for all three but colors and size changes between the versions.
  • Type A – Green, purple, and grey
  • Type B – Blue, orange, and grey; smaller in size than types A and C
  • Type C – Blue, gold, and brown
Known S24 recovery ships are:
  • USS Damato and USS Robert Owens dated 2/20/62 with Type C
  • USS Holder dated 1/21/62 with Type A
  • USS Antietam dated 2/27/62 with Type C

The image of the USS Antietam cover is from Eddie Bizub's Space Cover of the Week 600: MA-6 USS Antietam.

The S25 and S26 John Glenn Day covers with a 2/21/62 postmark from New Concord, OH have a Type A cachet.

Note that the Glenn launch covers from PAFB and Port Canaveral used Type A cachets. The Project Mercury FDC can be found with both Type B and Type C cachets.

All times are CT (US)
