I note with interest that the "ordinary US Navy single colour rubber stamp cachet" and the three colour Morris W. Beck cachets share the same design.
Did Morrs Beck design the cachet and then 'donate' a single colour rubber stamp to the Navy, or was the design done by the Navy and improved upon by Mr. Beck creating a three colour series of printing blocks?
Basically my question is: who designed the US Navy recovery ship cachets?

The single colour recovery ship rubber stamps were designed by Morris Beck who then donated several to the Navy depending on the number of ships that were involved in particular missions.

Thanks for that.
A follow up question is: all of the single colour rubber stamp cachets for the Apollo program seem to have been applied using purple ink (based on the limited number of covers I've seen on the net); are there any known colour variations out there?

In addition to the red ink cachets blue and black ink was also used for Apollo Prime Recovery Ship (PRS) Rubber Stamp Cachets (RSCs). Here are the ones in my collection:
Apollo 1 – Blue
Apollo 4 – Black
Apollo 7 – Blue and Black
Apollo 9 – Black
Apollo 14 – Black
There are also covers cancelled at Norfolk, Virginia, the home of Task Force 140. These used both red and black ink.

See Ross' great recovery ship website for descriptions and images of all the recovery ship printed and rubber stamp varieties.

Thanks for all the information. I need to organise my internet resources better, to at least match the level of detail I have on my launch database. I feel another project coming on... 🙂
