I've just today taken possession of a long awaited copy of David S Ball's "American Astrophilately, The First Fifty Years" and am eagerly reading it. collectSPACE is quite prominently mentioned in its opening pages, so I thought it would be appropriate to mention this topic here.On page 6, in relation to an exposition regarding backdating of postal items, Mr Ball lights on (although not named as such) a Moonshot 1969 postcard with a Cape Canaveral July 16th 1969 postmark. He states "Is this postcard appropriately backdated? The postcard was printed after the flight."
I am in possession of one such postcard, and I very strongly doubt it is backdated, and it was most probably printed well before the flight of Apollo 11.
The title on the back reads: "Apollo 11. A Series of [obscured by cancellation] From Authentic NASA Transparencies." The back has the inscription "A Dixon-Lotus Production - Printed in Great Britain," with a small inscribed address in the lower right for John Menzies c/o Cody's P.O.B. 1030 Kissimmee, Florida 32741.
There appear to be five different photographs used in the series, all with a unified theme, and although the blurb on the back seemingly refers to the Apollo 11 mission, all the photographs displayed on the fronts are from the Apollo 9 mission. One of the set of five quite clearly shows Scott's distinctive red space helmet.
Can anybody shed any further light on this postcard series?
