Wikipedia lists the USS Recovery as a Rescue and Salvage class ship once based at Norfolk. In 1960 it participated in escape and recovery tests off the Virginia coast for NASA's man in space program. It was part of the recovery task force for MA-3 in April, MR-3 in May, and MR-4 in July, 1961. While there was no expectation that MS-1 would require recovery on November 1st and the ship was not equipped for spacecraft communications and tracking might it have been on standby for MS-1? (No suggestion of this in NASA History Series, Schultz or Smith.) Also not in its favor is a military sealift rubber cachet on the reverse that says 1961 Arctic Operations. The postmark reads APO 677 which was found in Canadian territory. It does make me wonder, however, how a MR-4 SRS, USS Conway, can sport an Arctic rubber stamp. Am I rich? |

Probably just a coincidence being postmarked on this date but still nice! You can always check the ship's log to see where she was on November 1, 1961. |
