Relating the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project program, a special cancel was issued by the American authorities. The cancel had Houston or KSC in its title.

I've read that covers exist with a fault (error in the cancel), namely APPLLO instead of APOLLO. Are there such covers? If so, a scan could do?

A multi-date postmark from the Baikonur Cosmodrome was used to commemorate ASTP. One of the postmarks had the Russian language version of the word "APOLLO" misspelled "APPLLO".

Antoni, please explain your scan.

I see the word Apollo in the cachet, but not the error.

Bart, maybe it would be clearest if you look this image. So you can see the difference of word APOLLO (above the Baikonur word) in the cancels dated 15 775 and the misspelled word APPLLO in the cancel 17-775.

I hope it helps you.

This was an official cancelling device issued by the Ministry of Communications and being used for sometime to service Mezhkniga requests by Directorate of publishing and forwarding postage stamps (Russian - ДИЭЗПО), then subsequently destroyed and replaced by a "good" one.

According to my observations — the erroneous cancellation is not uncommon and can be found on the Franklin Mint medal sets, German covers and Soviet ASTP official covers (on the rare occasions). It was one of the five Baikonur special cancellations issued and had a fixed date - 17.7.75, that's why it has a very clean and streamlined appearance (referred as Type IV by Yakobs catalog).

All times are CT (US)
