I would like some advice on expanding my collection of space memorabilia into the field of philatelics... I am not interested in autographs, and I am not a stamp collector, but as with my other interests, e.g. badges and passes, I like artefacts that are quite specific: from a certain event, from a certain place, from a certain mission, etc. Therefore recovery or launch covers seem attractive to me. And it seems like - when disregarding signed pieces, that these are relatively easy to obtain, and affordable too. It appears to me that Spaceflori is a good and reliable dealer, but I'm sure there must be others?

To educate myself, I'm considering getting the Wilhem catalogue and I think I saw a CD with info on Apollo covers, etc. somewhere...

I would appreciate advice for me as a total cover-novice on building a collection, what to look for (certain types of cachets?), what to avoid and just about anything else.

Martin, welcome to the world of astrophilately!

First and foremost, check out the Space Unit.

Check out the "Space Unit Publications for Sale" hyperlink. It has several guides for sale (including Paul Bulver's Apollo cover catalog that you mentioned).

Also on the homepage, there is a dropdown menu, and if you click on "Resources" it will refer you to a lot of good publications outside of the Space Unit.

And feel free to ask questions - we are a pretty helpful bunch! Enjoy!

Martin, I would also like to welcome you to the wonderful world of astrophilately.

A couple of thoughts. I would certainly recommend Spaceflori (Florian Noller). He is one of the most helpful and knowledgeable dealers around. I've bought many items from him and have always been impressed with his knowledge and service. You can't go wrong buying from Florian.

You mention Recovery Ship covers. This is an area of great interest and there are now two excellent sites on the web which catalog such covers. The first is Owen Murray's most comprehensive site of Morris Beck covers. While his site includes all of the Beck covers including non-recovery ship covers, it includes the most complete list of Beck Recovery Ship covers in existence. The other site is my own Recovery Ship Cover and Postmark Variety website, which attempts to list all know Recovery Ship covers including cachet and postmark variations. The Space Unit site also mentions other handbooks on the subject.

Thanks Ross (and Dennis). Great sites. The Beck covers look fascinating.
