Philatelic events during the International Year on Astronomy in Germany:
  • An illustrated stationery envelope with the IYA Logo is already available.

  • Private mail service S...mail at Reutlingen will issue a sheetlet of 10 stamps commemorating German astronomer Johannes Kepler in late 2008/early 2009. The stamps are &euro1.43 ea.

  • An international stamp exhibition on "Kepler, Astronomy and Spaceflight" will take place at Weil der Stadt (Kepler's birthplace near Stuttgart) from 21.3.-1.5.2009.

  • A philatelic presentation on "Kepler and the IYA" will be given on 7.5.2009, 14 Uhr, on Germany's national NAPOSTA stamp exhibition at Essen. Good meteorological conditions provided, solar observations with telescopes will be offered on the fairground. There will also be a guided tour at the Walter-Hohmann-Sternwarte Essen.

  • A stamp commemorating Johannes Kepler will be issued during the IBRA/NAPOSTA Stamp Fair/Exhibition on 7 May 2009. The usual First Day of Issue postmarkers at Berlin and Bonn and a pictorial postmarker at Essen will be used.

  • Pictorial postmarker with a mobile sales stand of the German Postal Service will be available on the same day (7 May) at Weil der Stadt, Kepler's birthplace near Stuttgart. The illustration of the postmarker will show a portrait of the astronomer and an image of the Herschel satellite.

  • Stamp exhibition on astronomy from 24 to 28 September 2008 at Timmendorfer Strand on the Baltic Sea, jointly organised by the local Cultural Association and the Adult Training Institution.

  • Philatelic tours:
    1. On the tracks of Johannes Kepler in Germany and Austria (Linz, Graz und Wien) and the Czech Republic (Prague)
    2. The Life of Galilei (in Italy: Rome, Padua and Florence)
    3. To the launch of the Kepler zond at Cape Canaveral.
An international "Philatelic Task Group" will assemble all IYA activities worldwide. For details, see this web portal.

Do all of these new Year of Astronomy stamps count as Space or space-related stamps, or should the stamp show a satellite or spacecraft?
