ROPEX 2007 to feature Sputnik postmarkROPEX 2007 will be held in Rochester, New York on 18-20 May 2007. On its opening day, the show will feature a postmark commemorating the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Sputnik 1 satellite (the world's first artificial satellite) by the Soviet Union on 4 Oct 1957. Full information about ROPEX and the Sputnik postmark is shown at the following link (including information about cacheted show covers): http://us.geocities.com/rpastamps/ropex.html#ropexcovers Note that the postmark shows the Sputnik 3 satellite, while the cachet on the show cover shows the Sputnik 1 satellite. A closeup of the redrawn ROPEX 2007 cancel (showing Sputnik 3), supplied by Thomas Fortunato, is shown here. In a letter to me, Thomas Fortunato, Special Events Coordinator/ROPEX Exhibits Chairman, states, "It was decided to have the actual satellite [Sputnik 1] on the cachet, while depicting the image of the craft [Sputnik 3] on the cancel." "We have had great difficulty finding an image suitable for cancel use of the Sputnik 1 craft, and decided that this graphic [Sputnik 3] helps honor the program as a whole." |
