I have postage stamps that are $0.04 U.S. Man in Space Project Mercury. They are in ment condition, and I would like to know if anyone would have information pertaining to its value.

I am no dealer but just a collector. Despite their age they have almost no value. These stamps are probably the easiest of all the space stamps to find. I often see them for sale at face value at stamp shows. I had purchased quite a few in the past and now sometimes use them for regular postage.

That source is wrong or you misinterpreted what was being appraised. The stamps themselves are worth $0.04 each, no more, no less. They can still be used if they have not been cancelled (obviously).

As a sheet, depending on condition, you may see a few cents increase on each but even complete sheets aren't considered very rare.

I am no expert on stamps but my wife and I have collected space stamps for many years [because they are space related]. One thing I have picked up is that if there is something wrong with a stamp it is worth more. For example, if the value was missing, or something was the wrong way round. In other words a mistake in the printing process. This is a philatelic quirk. I would not want a stamp that had the spacecraft printed incorrectly.

The Mercury space stamp is easily available even in the UK and does not cost very much. Robert and RMH are correct in saying the Mercury stamp has very little monetary value. However, if there are any of these stamps with something wrong this would increase the value depending on how rare the error was. It is possible that Dlady saw an example of one of the stamps with an error being quoted as worth $35.00.

But as I have already said I am no expert on stamps and do not know if any 'error' versions exist. Are any of our members true philatelists who can help on the question of error varieties for the Mercury stamp and their values?

Best wishes

Rob Wood
