A lot of patches show up on eBay where there should be a tab but there is no tab. In most cases, these are type where the tab was originally sewn on so it should be fairly obvious that the tab was removed, but in many cases there is no evidence of this. Were there missions where patches were issued with the payload specialists not-yet-named and are legitimately without an original tab in place? Or are nearly all of the ones that appear for sale just damaged in some way or another? Thanks. |

What became Mission 61B had a crew photo taken of the five NASA astronauts with their tabless (actually, apronless - tabs are on top, aprons on bottom) mission emblem.I do see photos of Fabian with a 51G patch sans apron. I know there was a change in payload specialists, but I'm curious if at one point, too, this was baselined as a crew of five. |

I got one of the current 41-G patches listed on eBay and the back shows no sign whatsoever of ever having had a tab attached, whether by heat or sewn-on.This was evidently the first STS patch to ever have a tab added for payload crew. When I bought my original 41-G patch, back some time ago, it had a strange non-metallic dark grey merrowed border instead of the normal silver. Anyone else ever heard of this possible variant or is it just a factory mistake? |

I have one of those patches and it appears there was never any tab or apron attached. Just the round patch with the five NASA crew members names. | |
