Zero-G Corporation announcement ZERO-G 300th Flight Patch ContestTo commemorate ZERO-G's 300th flight, we are asking our fans to design a patch that will be worn by the flight participants. All entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. EDT, Monday, March 26, 2012, to be considered. Entries must be submitted by email or fax (702.947.6373). The winner will be announced on April 2, 2012. The winning design will be transformed into a patch that will be worn on the right arm of the participant's flight suit. The designer will also win a free seat aboard flight ZG 300 out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL on April 14, 2012. The design must contain the following information and fit within a provided template provided. - Company Name: ZERO-G
- Flight Date: April 14, 2012
- Flight Number: ZG 300

How many people here submitted a design for this contest? Would anyone want to post their designs here after the deadline has passed?I submitted mine last night after an evening of going over my design several times and wondering if I did it justice. I kept mine really simple because I've seen so many patches that were overly complex. Maybe I had mine too simple, but after a while you have to stop second-guessing yourself and hit the 'send' button and move on. I wish it didn't have to be a circle in shape, as I had what I thought was a good idea in a different shape, but a circle it is. As noted in a thread about variants of the MACH 25 patches, I thought this was a good idea: quote:

Thanks for the reminder! I had meant to do this and it looks like I'll put it my design just before the deadline.I had played around with a few Zero-G patch designs in case I had made a second flight (I still have to make my first!) which I will use for the contest, and be happy to share afterward. |

Make sure not to release your design until after Zero G makes their announcement. It would be sad to have it disqualified because it was released too soon.Good luck to all participants. |

Good point. I know I'm up against people who had designed a LOT more patches than I have. Insignia design was never my main focus, I'm an illustrator. That said, I made mine very 'simplistic' for lack of a better word, because I've always felt that a lot of space-related patches are seriously over-designed and way too busy... |

My feelings, exactly in every way. I just submitted mine about a minute ago. It took me a very long time to finally decide on what font to do some of the lettering in and how to arrange it, but overall I'm happy with my patch design. After the contest, I'll post a picture. At first I kind of felt mine was too simple, although I don't think it'd do the patch justice to cram anything else inside. I think the artwork is pretty concise and balanced. This is only the second patch I've designed totally from scratch (the first one was for a school project a while ago). |

I wouldn't worry, there's no way you can be the only one who did that. That's why I didn't stress my weak photo shop skills with the lettering. I've always had real problems trying to get type to exactly follow the contour of a curve. My patch design was pretty weak in that regard. Still, I interpreted the submission process as just showing them what you have in mind, not something showing a "camera-ready" finished product. With mine, I used photo shop because mine had a strong use of silhouettes in color so I wanted to get that across to the judges. The only patches I've ever designed were illustration-based and I had the criteria already outlined in each case. One was for a GLCM (Tomahawk missiles deployed in trailers by the USAF) unit and the other was for a ICBM test launch, of a Peacekeeper missile. |

Wow an excellent design Blake! Congratulations! Mine was a very simple design but didn't get an honorable mention. Glad to see Luc and Nathan get recognized though. I can say that all four of these were superior to mine. Can't win them all.   |

Yeah, same here. I thought about doing the 'overly busy' patch design and figured most people would go that route. But I hate busy looking patches because often you have to stare at them a while to figure out what the heck they are. So mine was more like a logo design that would make a patch you'd be able to figure out from a few feet away. I keep forgetting that 'ten pounds of idea stuffed into a two pound container' is a popular design concept with patches. That's just not how I roll.It's not so much sour grapes when I say, "Good luck getting this made into a patch" to the Zero G people as that's going to be a mother of a design to do embroidery for... |

Mine can be found here.I opted for the four arrows because in weightlessness, what is up is down and vice versa. The placement of the lettering meant the patch could be read either way (save for the Zero G logo), either upside down or right-side up. And had this gone to production, it would have been easy to embroider. |

Actually it will be easy to embroider the winning design into a patch. Embroidery has come a ways since Gemini. |

Yeah, the toughest part of embroidery is just digitizing the design and picking the thread colors. Though all that can be done easily on computers. Pretty much the only limit is the thread size.Here's my design. I went for a pretty simple approach. On hindsight, I wish I would have painted the 727 in their company colors, included their logo, and did more stylized test since that seems to be what they were looking for. |

The 300th flight on Saturday was absolutely incredible and an overall great experience. Zero-G made it an amazing weekend for everyone on the flight and they were all incredibly classy and hospitable!For those wondering, I asked about the possibility of making some extra 300th Flight patches available to the public and Zero-G is planning on having more made. They weren't sure if they will put them up for sale on their site's merchandise shop, but I'll post here if they do. Here is a scan of how the patch turned out:  It translated to embroidery very well, in my opinion. |

Absolutely gorgeous patch in my opinion. Looking forward to the idea of them becoming available. You can tell Zero-G that there's a lot of collectors that would love to add this to their collections (me included)! |

I made a point to mention to the president of Zero-G that the space collecting community might have an interest in these and that it would be worth adding to their online store.She said that they definitely have thought about the collectors and hope to make them available to you guys. They legitimately appreciate the support from everyone! |
