As a long-time shuttle aficionado but a short-time patch collector, I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts on the following:

Mint-condition Lion Brothers STS-5 and STS-6 patches went for $193.73 --- each --- on eBay last night, while a mint STS-2 Lion Brothers patch brought $75.75, 41-B and 41-G went for 38.78 each, and STS-7, STS-8, and STS-9 went for $45.54, $43.42, and $46.45, respectively.

Do more seasoned members of the forum find these numbers a just a bit high, or am I naive? Are Lion Brothers shuttle-era patches that rare, or is something else going on here? I wouldn't expect these to sell for, say, $9.99 each --- these are pretty scarce, after all --- but nearly $200 for an unflown, unsigned patch, even if it is LB?

My initial reaction is that those sale prices are ludicrously high, but since I haven't pursued any Lion Bros. Shuttle patches, maybe the market has shifted with the end of the program and I didn't notice.

Awhile back, maybe 1.5 to 2 years ago, I bought a complete set of LB Apollo patches from cS member and trusted seller Chris Spain for US$25 each. At the time, if I recall correctly, LB Shuttle patches were selling for around US$15-20 max.

A cursory check of Ebay now shows a LB Apollo 14 patch with a Buy-It-Now of US$28.88, and Skylab I & II at US$19.99.

I have no earthly idea how an unexceptional (no sigs, unflown, etc.) Shuttle mission patch by LB or anyone else could possibly command those prices.

Chris is the guy to ask here. Maybe he has some insight, or maybe the impending end of the program has really brought out some suckers.

The two patches which sold for $193 each are regarded as extremely scarce. I believe it may be only the second time the bare backed STS-6 has been seen.

However there is also the simple case of more people wanting to buy than there are patches available and this is pushing prices up. For example, if it weren't for the second highest bidder I would have got the bare backed STS-5 for only $10 more than its sale price the last time it appeared, in 2008.

I would agree the end of program is drawing increased interest in shuttle patches. Perhaps the excellent crew patches website is helping to popularise these patches too.

Thanks to Kevin Randall for providing me with some details I've cited here.

Lion Bros. shuttle-era patch are rare, as not as many where made as with the Apollo and the Skylab patches.

As to the cost; going back before Chris had his shop on eBay and this is the price you would have to pay. When I was adding them to the collection I was paying out $82+ a time. But then Chris set up his shop and the cost came down.

Today Chris seems to have only a few of them up for sale then he did. So the cost goes back up.

Do not let this put you off getting them, just bide you time and you'll get the set.

Those particular Lion Brothers STS-5 and STS-6 varieties are extremely rare, so it's not too surprising to see them sell at those levels.

A few years ago the less common Lion Brothers Shuttle patches (regular versions, not exceptionally rare ones) would generally sell for $30 to $50 a piece.

Over the last few years I've sold quite a lot of new-old stock Lion Brothers Shuttle patches, and due to the laws of supply and demand this inevitably pushed the price down to lows of $10-15 for some patches.

Now that my stock of most of these patches has run out it looks like the prices are climbing back to their old levels.

Supply and demand...

Hi David dmh, You must be Davidmihenry y***r (28), one of the bidders this morning? Welcome to the Lion Brothers NASA patch collectors circle.

Let me expand on what Alain, Butch and Chris have said above. The two LB patches which reached the highest prices this morning are ultra rare. The STS-5 bare cloth back patch, (to my knowledge), has only come up once in the last 5 years on eBay, that was lot No. 300217339649 on the 25th April 2008 when it sold for $89.88 with 8 bids from 5 bidders. The lot did include bare back versions of the LB STS-1, 2, 3, & 4 as well. The seller was an ex-worker at LB. Since that date only the plastic coated back version of that STS-5 patch has come up for sale either as a single patch or as a set of patches on eBay or in Chris Spain's eBay shop.

The STS-6 bare cloth back version of this patch has never (to my knowledge) come up for sale on eBay or in Chris Spain's eBay shop. (Correct me if I'm wrong Chris). I know of only one other example which was sold privately a few years ago. I would like to ask Chris how many of the above LB patches he has seen or handled.

Yes, I must admit the final price of $80.79 for the STS-2 bare back patch did suprise me a bit, but when two or in this case three collectors bid for one patch the sky can be the limit.

I have been in contact with Doug the seller of all the Lion Brothers Shuttle patches sold this morning since he listed them on eBay, and he was suprised at the amount of interest in those patches. No doubt he is now laughing all the way to the bank with $849.44, less eBay and Paypal fees.

I don't have a record of how many of the rare STS-5 or 6 versions I've seen but I'd guess I've seen maybe two or three of the STS-5s in the last 5 years. I've probably seen a few more of the rare STS-6 patches but these are divided between the three sub-types (bare back, slick back and white plastic back).

If someone is looking for an example of one of the three types of STS-6 patches I might be willing to part with one of mine.

Many thanks for the answer Chris.

When you are ready to part with your STS-6 type 1 with the slick back plastic coated back patch, please bare me in mind.

I was able to buy one each of the STS-5 and STS-6 bare back patches many years ago on eBay for some few dollars. To that time I was either not aware that these were LB patches nor that specially these two are that rare.

If I remember correctly I sent Chris scans of them when he set up his first LB patches site back when we were in discussion on what STS LB patches have been made.

Quite right Harald. Indeed, in my own notes I still have these varieties noted as "The Harald version".

Another lot of 10 Shuttle patches, (9 were Lion Brothers), have just sold on eBay, lot No.220784010949, for $305.00 with 6 bids from 4 bidders. The lot included plastic coated versions of the STS Program, STS-1, STS-2, STS-5, STS-6 (type 2), STS-7, and STS-8. Also bare cloth back versions of STS-3 and STS-9, + an AB Emblem version of STS-4.

This lot of 10 Shuttle patches was a re-listed lot of previously un-sold patches that ended on the 18th December 2009, (lot No.220526489814) at $80.00, from Mark 365commando (67).

What a difference 17 months makes, from no sale at $80.00 to sale at $305.00 won by dmh the author of this thread.

I also see you missed out on a STS-2 LB bare back patch, lot No.230620052376 which reached $56.00 with 11 bids from 4 bidders. This patch used to sell for about $25 to $30 each.

I now see that the Lion Brothers Shuttle patches are now starting to come out of the woodwork, four more were listed this morning on eBay.
  • STS Program vacuum sealed back patch starting at $34.99.
  • STS-1 bare back patch starting at $24.99.
  • STS-2 bare back patch starting at $34.99.
All three from the same seller.
  • STS-5 bare back patch starting at $50.00 from another seller.
It will be interesting to see how far these four will go.

Seems like we're going through another one of those phases like we did 4 or 5 years ago when everything was going through the roof, and bidding wars were the daily norm. Having been through one of these (and having been burned), I'll think I'll sit this one out for a little while.

The STS-5 LB Bare Back patch sold for $91.89 (£56.84) which is better than last time when it went for $193.73 (£119.84).

... on the other hand, that was after an ALT patch went for $210 earlier in the day.

Very interesting comments, all around.

I was keeping an eye on that ALT patch, and was hoping that it might get lost in all the recent excitement.

Obviously, it didn't.

David and JFS61, the LB ALT patch is a vacuum sealed plastic coated version. Jean the seller was not 100% sure about the backs. But looking at the LB Shuttle Program patch on Smithsonian Inst. NASM card she sold earlier on in the week, they are both the same type of vacuum sealed plastic coated backed patches.

The vacuum sealed plastic coated version of this LB ALT patch is rarer than the bare cloth back version and as both versions rarely come up for sale the price is normally very high. Looking back to previous eBay sales over the past 3 years, the prices paid are:
  • $204.49 on 26th January 2008. (b/b).
  • $202.55 on 15th March 2008. (b/b).
  • $386.99 on 25th April 2008. (b/b).
  • $152.55 on 29th June 2008. (b/b).
  • $153.00 on 14th July 2008. (b/b).
  • $255.55 on 9th October 2008. (b/b).
  • $255.50 on 9th October 2009. (b/b) on NASM card.
  • $21.50 on 15th March 2010. (v/s/p/c) on NASM card.
  • $380.55 on 3rd May 2010. (b/b).
  • $159.16 on 12th August 2010. (v/s/p/c).
  • $93.55 on 30th January 2011. (b/b).
  • $200.35 on 21st March 2011. (b/b).
  • $210.45 on 21st May 2011. (v/s/p/c) on NASM card.
So looking at the sales prices above, $210.45 is not excessive for this (v/s/p/c) patch and it's on a NASM card which is rare.

My post about the ALT patch was primarily tongue in cheek, as it is a hard patch. I guess I was kinda wishing out loud that not everything that comes up on eBay these days ends up going through the ceiling.

I am surprised the market is large enough to support those prices. I did't realize there were so many collectors.

Don't forget buyer fees.

The ALT was actually $270.25 with buyer fees (excluding possible additional credit card fees), and the 6 LB STS patches $230 with fees.

While I have listed normal eBay auction sales of these hard to find Lion Brothers Shuttle patches, I have not listed another important and prolific source of these patches, namely Chris Spain's eBay shop. So here is a list of Buy It Now sales from that shop going back to November 2008.
  • STS Program patch (v/s/p/b) 2 x $24.99, 2 x $19.99.
  • STS-1 (b/b) 1 x $14.99, 1 x $29.99.
  • STS-2 (b/b) 1 x $29.99, 1 x $24.99.
  • STS-3 (b/b) 8 x $9.99, 4 x $14.99, 1 x $19.99.
  • STS-4 (b/b) 8 x $9.99, 3 x $14.99, 1 x $19.99.
  • STS-5 type 2 (p/c) 9 x $9.99, 1 x $14.99, 1 x $19.99.
  • STS-6 type 2 (p/c) 1 x $14.99, 2 x $24.99, 1 x $29.99.
  • STS-7 (p/c) 1 x $14.99, 1 x $24.99, 1 x $29.99.
  • STS-8 (p/c) 4 x $9.99, 4 x $14.99.
  • STS-9 (b/b) 1 x $14.99, 1 x $19.99, 1 x $24.99, 1 x $29.99.
  • STS-41B (p/c) 3 x $14.99, 1 x $19.99, 1 x $29.99.
  • STS-41C (p/c) 5 x $9.99, 2 x $14.99.
  • STS-41D (v/s/p/b) 11 x $14.99, 1 x $24.99.
  • STS-41G (v/s/p/b) 1 x $14.99, 2 x $19.99, 1 x $24.99.
  • STS-51A (v/s/p/b) 1 x $14.99, 1 x $19.99, 2 x $24.99.
  • STS-51C (v/s/p/b) 1 x $29.99.
There has been no sales of the rarer patches like the ALT (both backing types), STS Program (b/b), STS-1 (p/c), STS-2 (p/c), STS-5 type 1 (b/b), STS-6 type 1 of any of the variants that I can find.

Details before November 2008 are very sketchy.

If I have missed any Chris let me know.

Only two Lion Brothers Shuttle mission patches have been listed so far this comming week on eBay, both by Lunar Legacies:
  • STS-9 (b/b). Sold for 31.00 with 4 bids from 3 bidders.

Both with a starting price of $9.95 (£6.20).

One re-listed STS-4 (b/b) from Collectionspace_it, starting at $9.95. Unsold again.

Just a point to note. Over the past month six STS-51C LB mission patches have been listed and sold, (and a seventh now listed). This was a very hard patch to find until recently.

I have only found two Lion Brothers Shuttle patches listed so far this week. Both are in mixed lots of four NASA patches. Both lots have a starting price of $6.95 (£4.23), and are from the same seller, Rozegal (3225). They are:
  • STS-5 type 2 (p/c) in with an AB Emblem STS-3 4", plus a 3" NASA Meatball and an Apollo 11 patches.

  • STS-8 (p/c) in with a LB Skylab Program patch, and AB Emblem STS-51D and STS-27 patches, (all 4").

    Up-date:
Both lots ended 20 hours early with a Buy It Now for $15.00 (£9.16) each from the same buyer.

A mixed lot of 10 patches has just been listed on eBay. The lot includes a NASA 'worm' patch and 9 Shuttle patches, of which 5 are AB Emblem, and 4 are Lion Brothers patches.

The 4 Lion Brothers patches are:
  • STS-5 type 2 (p/c).
  • STS-6 type 2 (p/c).
  • STS-8 (p/c).
  • STS-51C (v/s/p/c).
Note: The NASA 'worm' patch has a red embroidered border around it which is unusual. The Shuttle Program patch is a very early AB Emblem version. The STS-51L is a two piece 1st production run patch with a silver comet, (not grey). The other 3 AB Emblem patches are, STS-1, STS-51I, and STS-51J.

Update: Sold for $67.00 (£41.17) with 7 bids from 5 bidders.

Chris Spain has sold his last Lion Brothers Shuttle patch, (I think)* a STS-41D (v/s/p/b) with a Buy It Now sale for $24.99 (£15.23) from his eBay store. *(Correct me if I'm wrong Chris).

I have found another eBay lot No.220813964371 which is a Presentation Piece which includes a 'Flown' Lion Brothers STS-2 patch, (probably a bare back version). It is described as:
A 14" x 18" Space Shuttle Columbia Commemorative Art Memorabilia - Very Rare piece of the Columbia's first commercial launch. It is Number 3 of only 100 commissioned by Rockwell for a special group of vendors that contributed to the success of its construction and launch.

It is in it's original frame and matting. It contains a commissioned signed and numbered piece (3 of 100) by W. Scott depicting the Columbia in it's landing configuration. Just under the Shuttle Columbia is the actual shoulder patch (LB STS-2) worn by the astronauts during this mission, and was carried into space along with other commemorative items.

The second piece is the actual Post Card dated on the day of the launch (however it was never actually mailed). The card contains a picture of the launch done in 'Silk' Cachet and bordered by a gold embossed frame. It also has two stamps, now collectors items themselves. One is 'Probing the Planets' and the other is 'Freedom to Speak Out - A Root of Democracy'.

This was received at a 'Congratulations To a Successful Launch' Dinner hosted by Rockwell several weeks after the launch.

This item has been listed so far for 24 days of a 30 day listing, and has seen the seller reduce the Buy It Now price down from $750.00 to $650.00 to $550.00 to $399.00 or Best Offer, and has added -Price Reduced- to the description.

No takers or offers. Unsold.

Now been re-listed for a further 30 days at the reduced price of $399.00 (£245.16).

I have come across another Lion Brothers Shuttle Program patch listed on eBay, lot No.280719669265. I don't know what the backing is as the seller has an International bidding and communication bar in place. There looks to be a small 'pull' in the blue thread just above the 'P' in space.

The starting price is $15.00 (£9.16).

Sold for $15.00 (£9.29) with 1 bid.

All times are CT (US)
