Just curious, how far back can one go and be sure that they're still getting original first run shuttle patches from AB?

I am well aware that the ones from the 80's and 90's have been redone on newer equipment and for those one needs to go to eBay or the secondary market, but I didn't know if say, everything from the past 10 years or so was still NOS from the original production runs (save and except STS-107), or if they've all been remade as well due to the recent demand for all things shuttle.

I thought the production runs were rather large -- like 5000-10,000 -- and therefore rarely run out. Are the numbers correct?

I'm curious about this as well. The first space mission patches I ever bought were a 4" Apollo set and 4" Shuttle patches from STS-1 through 51-L, all purchased from the NASA Dryden gift shop in '84-'85 and presumably manufactured by AB (though I can't say for sure). Only over the last few years have I been "catching up" on Shuttle patches, but I haven't doubled up on any of those early ones, so I'm interested with respect to how an AB patch made relatively recently would differ from the same emblem produced back then...I don't have any to compare side by side.

It's strictly based on my experience, but slightly rougher detailing (unlike the newer "machine-pristine" detailing), plus dimple-pattern plastic backings are a pretty good indicator it's A-B vintage, not modern. This does not, of course, hold true on patches produced in the last 20 years - it's mostly pre-90, from what I've seen.
