This patch was issued at, or about, the time of the Moon landing by the sweets manufacturer Cadbury as a 'give away' with their products.

It has some unique features, one being that the eagle seems to be carrying the olive branch in only one talon.

I would be grateful if collectSPACE members could have a look and, with memories jogged, post any further information such as who made it and how many were issued.

Unfortunately (fortunately) I was of that era but do not remember space patches from Cadburys. I do remember space decals from Super Mousse (A sort of Milky Way copy). I remember having to collect tokens on the packet and pestering for them to get lots of tokens. Also feeling a little sick from eating so many... Happy Days all in the cause of spaceflight.

They didn't stop with the 11 but also seem to have produced a 16 as well.

Both have the same backing but the embroidery on the 16 is slightly better - i.e. less crude - than the 11 version which, it has to be said, is a very poor imitation of the real thing. Not sure if they produced any others and tracking down 40 year old copies of the promotional ads is proving tricky - any "Countdown" comic collectors out there?

Ah!! You must be Ticker57 (118) the winning bidder for these two patches on eBay on the 18th May.

I was the loosing bidder for both these Cadbury promotional patches.

I too only know of these two examples, Apollo 11 and 16, and have not seen or heard of any other examples.

A little off subject but I do remember having to eat rather a lot of beans to obtain some Apollo 8 posters and Walls sausages at one time for mission decals.

So, Kevin, you were one of the other two watchers of this auction. I think the seller was hoping for a little more international action but it wasn't to be. Makes a change to be bidding on stuff from this side of the pond though so I expect we'll be running up against each other again in the future. I'm in the process of researching this promo and hope to come up with some info soon. I'll post as and when something develops. It would make sense that they produced them from 11 through to 17 but who knows?

The seller Baywatch2005 (157) only listed these two Apollo Cadbury patches on eBay.co.uk. He might of got a better international response if he had listed on eBay.com as well.

May I ask you, what was your maximum bid for each of these patches? (You know my maximum bids).

I'd considered offering the seller a BIN of £25 for the two but, as there were no previous sales to base a price on and I didn't want to come across as just another opportunistic punter, I decided to let the auction run its course. If memory serves, my opening bid was for £10 per patch which I upped to £15 as the auction neared its end so the final price seemed a bit of a bargain. I don' t know if there would have been much interest from overseas buyers. Although the 11 is listed on crew patches, it looks like the poor relation in terms of quality and it's only the fact of it being contemporaneous with the program and the spare slot in my collection that made it of any interest to me.

Many thanks for that. Looks like I was a long way off the mark then.

As other threads have commented on, it's really down to what you're prepared to pay, how much you want it and whether or not you find yourself in a bidding war. Personally, when I factor in the extra £11 import and PO handling charge I usually have to pay on a patch bought from the US, £15 ($25) doesn't seem very much in my opinion especially on patches you don't see very often. I'll certainly let you know if I come across another one.

Many thanks again, if I see Apollo's 12, 13, 14, 15, and 17, I will let you know.

Yes, I resent paying U.K. Border Agency, (formerly U.K. Customs), Import Duty, Value Added Tax, and most of all the now £13.50 Handling Fee. The last patch I won on eBay cost me an extra £40.47 ($64.50). Ouch!

I think this is the set, or at least part of it:

I don't know why some patches have black backings and the others white but they do all seem to belong to the same set.

All are partially embroidered on some kind of thin material (not twill) and have cut edges. I get the impression they were made as cheaply as possible, which makes sense for give-aways.

I never really looked at these before as I assumed they were fairly modern. Also I didn't have the Apollo 11 patch (I inserted that image in the set above) so I didn't really make the Cadbury's connection until now.

Incidentally, you can see the edges of some of these patches in the photo posted by moorouge at the top of this thread. Maybe he also has the Apollo 1/7/8 patches?

Thanks Chris, that's saved me some legwork. I've scoured my ancient copies of TV Comic/TV21/Eagle with no success and was beginning to look further afield.

I can certainly remember the offer from my youth (I was 12 in 1969) but I was always more interested in the real things which were, sadly, almost unobtainable in the UK back then. NASA, at that time, only seemed to send over mission profiles and the odd litho to eager wannabe astronauts from the UK and trying to get an International Money Order to purchase goods from the US was too much trouble for a youngster (how I longed for a pair of genuine X Ray Specs).

With these, as I recollect, you collected wrappers from Cadburys Dairy Milk and sent them in to redeem against a patch. Almost as much fun as being a Sky Ray Moon Fleet Captain, a Walls Ice Cream promo from 1966.

How you manage to keep coming up with the goods amazes me. You're a genuine asset to the collecting fraternity.

I was 11 years old in 1969, and I can remember the 1st moon landing, (and following moon landings), and as you said it was nearly impossible to get the 'real' AB Emblem Apollo mission patches at that time.

I had to wait until summer 1975 before I found a U.K. source for the AB Emblem full size Apollo mission patches. That was from 'Space Frontiers Ltd.' in Havant Hampshire, near Portsmouth.

I managed to buy all except the Apollo 1 patch. All were the original bare backed versions.

Now the 'real coup' (as I see it now), was they sent me an AB Emblem Apollo 15 'Crew' patch, with the silver 'XV' & the initials above 'WO' of Worden, for only about £2.25 + p&p. I never knew this fact until I bought another as part of a NASA presentation with a 'Flown to the Moon' U.S. Flag last year, (2010). So I've now got two of the Apollo 15 silver 'XV Crew' patches.

I know that Space Frontiers was the source of this Apollo 15 crew patch because I mounted and framed all those Apollo patches at the same time, and only removed the patches from the frame in 2010.

Here's the very promo from April 1972. Wonder if they ever finished the set?

Peter Fairly who was ITN's space codependent apparently sourced and supplied Apollo patches which where advertised in TV Times, etc.

This is mentioned in his book "A Whiff of News." Fascinating story of his coverage of space, which I got via eBay.

Thanks to robert_I I think we may have finally solved this particular riddle. I contacted the Cadbury Archive earlier this year only to be told they had no evidence of any promotion being run in the early seventies offering patches for wrappers. That's not to say they categorically denied it, just that there was nothing in the archive to substantiate the claim. So I trawled through a whole bunch of ancient comics from the period and came upon an ad offering mission patches through a company called Space Spin-off Ltd in a copy of 'Countdown' from 1972. That Apollo 11 patch looked suspiciously familiar.

Following robert_I's message, I too dug out a copy of Fairley's autobiography and, lo and behold, he was the man behind Space Spin-off Ltd. As he writes in his book:

Shortly before Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon, Look-in (a UK comic of the time) was approached by a company called Space Spin-off Ltd to run a special offer in the junior TV Times of a replica of the Apollo 11 mission badge. Each Apollo crew designed its own mission badge, which the astronauts wore on the chests of their space suits and coveralls. The Apollo 11 badge was predominantly gold and blue and depicted an eagle landing on the Moon, with a small blue and white Earth in the distance. The replicas which Space Spin-off Ltd were offering were beautifully embroidered in up to nine different colours, with some 11,000 stitches in each badge. They had cost 50p each to manufacture; the company was offering them at 60p. Alan Fennell (Editor of Look-in) snapped up the idea, an article accompanied the badge offer and some 50,000 were sold.
A little heavy on the hyperbole considering the naffness of the patch. Fairley does claim to have received clearance from NASA to have these manufactured but makes no mention of getting permission from AB Emblem to use their designs. The patches were produced by Thomas Fattorini in Birmingham, UK. Not sure of the total runs but I'm hoping a little more digging around will help answer that question and whether or not a complete set of 12 patches was produced.

All times are CT (US)
