I enjoyed seeing the entrants for NASA's employee commemorative patch contest and decided to make one of my own. Tim Gagnon encouraged me through the process and I'm grateful for his help.  Space Shuttle Commemorative Patch - Honors the space shuttle program and it's years of service; 1981-2010. Names of the five shuttle orbiters that flew in space are in the border. Gold color of border signifies the golden era of space exploration achieved by the space shuttle. The American flag represents the contributions and accomplishments of the American people, containing 14 stars memorializing the astronauts lost in the Challenger and Columbia accidents. The shuttle is shown in orbit above the earth; it's mission environment. Five stars in the blackness of space indicate the five orbiters, three to the right signifying the orbiters Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour and two at the top signifying Columbia and Challenger. The Astronaut symbol is shown streaking across the sky denoting the astronauts who flew aboard space shuttles and the advancement of human space exploration. Patch design by Robert Sorenson. Many of us have had ideas about an end of shuttle patch design. Good to see you've acted on yours. Very nice design and narrative about the meaning of your patch. You were fortunate to have the encouragement from Tim Gagnon. Tim is a great talent and resource and friend, and we're lucky to have him. |

Mine arrived in the mail today. Really neat patch. I am amazed with the talent that the people had in designing patches for the end of the shuttle. Would recommend patch collectors get this one. |

I received mine a few days ago and I think it is a fantastic patch. Just wondering why you left the Enterprise off the patch? |

To answer the question: There was no Shuttle Enterprise in/after 1981. |

Not so. Enterprise was still performing useful functions in support of the program up to 1985 when it was used for fit checks at the SLC-6 pad at Vandenburg AFB.Bob focused his designs on orbiters that flew in space. |

Tim, correct, I should have written Enterprise in active flight. What is considered the start of the shuttle program? Was it the announcement of the shuttle program on the Moon during I believe Apollo 16. That would be as early as 1972! That's a pretty long time for any space program. An internet search confirms my guess. Please see addition below: Once I watched a documentary on TV and the story was that Young learned of the launch of the shuttle program while on the Moon during Apollo 16. Since Apollo 16 was in April and three months later this info on the documentary must be wrong. Sorry don't remember the shows name. On edit: The shuttle program was formally launched on January 5, 1972, when President Nixon announced that NASA would proceed with the development of a reusable space shuttle system. |

Thanks, I got the When We Left Earth DVD set but have not watched it yet. Will check out Part 5. I must have seen another older show with the same incorrect claim.Oh well, we all know that Young knows many things ahead of time. He is one smart man. I assume he must be pretty upset how things are run nowadays. He left a legacy and we better continue with progress in space and not cancellations of programs on earth. By the way to get back to the topic starter. The patch shown above is very nice and as one person said I like it better than the winning emblem also. |

During Apollo 16 Tony England who was serving as Capcom radioed up to Young and Duke that Congress passed the space authorization budget which includes the Space Shuttle (not exact quotes).So Nixon announced the program in January, it wasn't until April when Congress approved the budget. |

For me, the start of the Shuttle was when they announced the first group of astronauts to fly the Shuttle - I used that as my starting point as to who to get autographs from (the corps at that time being the 35 TFNGs, plus the 27 active astronauts, plus Pogue who was on extended leave.) But everybody has their own interpretation. |

Just received my commemorative patch from Bob, and I'm very impressed. Terrific design, and very well executed in embroidery. This looks like a proper space patch...unlike the "official" Shuttle commemorative, which to me has the appearance of being designed by a corporate art department.Bob said that he isn't yet sure whether he's going to have another batch made, so I'd definitely recommend getting one while they last! |

Received my patch this morning and it looks great! I agree that this is way better than the official end-of-program patch. I particularly like the Navy blue and gold color scheme.  Seriously, I highly recommend this patch! |

I also bought one of these patches and I agree-it looks great. That being said, based on a review this week by NASA of the remaining Shuttle launch dates there's the very real possibility that the patch will need to be modified to change 2010 to 2011. |

Two comments, first the patch. This should have been the official patch for the end of the shuttle program! It is beautiful, simple and classic. A fantastic job, hope to see it on eBay in the near future. Second, I don't understand why some of you are making a big deal about Enterprise not being on the patch, as far as I know it did not go in to space, it was not given a mission number, etc. Enterprise has to be the only test vehicle with it's own patch! So stop trying to yell foul where there is none. |

After creating this patch and STS-135 got pushed into 2011, I decided to have a revised version made to make the year current and replaced the yellow-colored thread with metallic gold. The scanned image does not do justice to the bright, shiny finish of the thread. See entry in Buy, Sell, Trade for details on how to obtain this patch version.
