I've moved these comments from another thread...

I've just noticed that the Apollo 12 crew example sold yesterday, the one sold earlier in the week, and the example I bought myself a while back were all sold alongside an Apollo 11 'brown moon' patch.

Is it possible that the famous 'brown moon' Apollo 11 patch that's sometimes mentioned as a possible early AB Emblem patch is actually also from Dallas Cap and Embroidery?

Looking in detail at the Apollo 11 brown/green moon patch and the Apollo 12 crew patch, both use the same black velvety background.

Turn the patches over and both have an almost identical cheesecloth backing.
The tails are also of similar lengths and are laid across the back in a similar way.
Finally, the long threads on the back (don't know the technical term) are distinctive, with both patches having colored threads running in from the bottom border for a certain distance where they seem to tie-in to long white threads coming from further across the patch.

Note: There exist two versions of the 'brown moon' patch, one with a black velvety background and the other with a bacl twill background. The comparison I make above is with the velvet version.

My own "brown/green moon" Apollo 11 patch has a twill black background, but shares in common something with the velvet-background patch that was sold here. Both came attached to an additional cloth piece (in my case, a velvet pouch) with an embroidered copyright notice. The auction example also has an information sheet which identifies the Needle Painters Guild, Ltd. of Weaverville, North Carolina. AB Emblem is located in Weaverville, North Carolina, thus it appears both originated from AB.

I suspect AB Emblems actually made the patch while Needle Painters Guild created the display.

All times are CT (US)
