Here's the 1/48 Revell kit of Apollo Lunar Module: Eagle, but I decided not to try to modify it to be more accurate, but less – by basing the color scheme on the Grumman contractor model. The Grumman model is itself a pretty attractive piece, and there are many photos of astronauts posing with it, so I thought, "How much minimal effort it would take to improve this kit?"

The windows are larger than the model kit, in fact I fear perhaps slightly too large, but then perhaps the end result is better with the error in that direction. The legs were much too spindly in the original model, so these are bulked up with 3mm aluminium tubing. S-Band antenna and EVA antenna where redesigned, using the original parts as the starting point.

I haven't bothered with the VHF antennas or docking target, as there's no good place to mount them, and accuracy has its limits with the whole concept here. Thrusters needed to be drilled out and I took the precaution to fix them to the model with wire, as I just knew they I would loose them otherwise.

Finally, I melted the flag with a lighter to give it a few creases and waves. All in all, embracing the limitations of the original kit has made something closer to all those models from the early days, which I like in a nostalgic sort of way.

Great idea.

Hope you won't get into trouble after burning a US flag...

That's really nice, great work. This would look nice next to a production LM in the same scale, would be a good comparison. That's got me planning.

A very nice take on the old Revell kit. I may do the same with mine now.
