Can anyone recommend an accurate 1:48 or bigger X-15 kit that's commonly available for a reasonable price? Difficulty of assembly/finish is not a factor; I would be commissioning an experienced modeler to build it up. Just want to know what I should start with. Thanks!

Look for the kits by Special Hobby. They do nice X-15 kits in both 48th and 32nd.

Depending on what version of the X-15 you want, you have some choices in both scales. In 1/48th scale the only kit currently available are from Special Hobby as mentioned above. They need a bit of work to make a presentable model and the Hypersonic Models conversion sets make for a very nice model. New Ware also does sets for backdating the X-15A-2 to the earlier version and also has an assortment of others as well. Out of production resin kits include the X-15A-2 from CollectAire and the X-15 from Pend Orielle both can be found on eBay from time to time.
In 1/32 scale Special Hobby has done the X-15A-2 with and without the tanks as well as the early 'standard' X-15 with the XLR11 engines. They do plan to do make the 'standard' X-15 with the XLR99 at some point. Sper Bug Models does cockpit and various detail sets for these kits which really help the overall look.
There has been discussion with one company to create a 1/18th scale X-15 kit, but no definitive word has come of that lately.
