I was taking another look at my Historic Space Apollo 11 coldplate acrylic this morning and it occurred to me that you very seldom (ever?) see this or any other of their acrylics for sale anywhere. I can understand why this may be so as they are real keepers. I certainly have no intentions of parting with mine. I wonder, though, if there are any plans for future Historic Space acrylics. It's been quite a while since the last offering. |

The acrylic editions are a real challenge to produce! The design, costs, prototyping, presentation cases and packaging all have to be individually made, and with the editions being so small it almost becomes a labour of love more than a commercial enterprise. Acrylic companies want to deal in numbers like 10,000 with a 30% failure rate, so working with a company that is happy to put that large amount of work into an edition of 30 pieces, at a small profit to themselves, and giving a 95% success rate is no easy task.Remember all the costs are up front before one ever sells! So there is a quite a level of risk involved. To date I have been fortunate that collectors have wanted my acrylics, but it is prudent that one cannot risk a large sum of money in the hope that something appeals. I always said to myself that I would only produce each acrylic edition when I felt the source material was really worth those efforts. I still have an interest to produce another edition but will only do so when the "right" material presents itself. |

I too enjoy your work. One idea might be to "pre-sell" them. This way you would only produce ones that have been paid for. For example, you could post that you're producing an Apollo 13 XXX and get a firm order for that piece. So, if 50 people want one and pay for one, you would produce 50. If people don't want to pay 100% up front, you charge say 50% up front and then the other 50% upon completion. Just an idea... |

Pre-selling, to me, is not something I would feel comfortable with. One doesn't know if the encapsulation process will be a success, and until they are complete, whether the acrylics are aesthetically pleasing. I realise its the modern way to get someone else to take the risk and pay the costs, but I am afraid I am "old school" on this. Make them and THEN see if they are saleable!Its been a while since my last acrylic edition and I don't know if the acrylic company would ever take on such a tricky and time-consuming project again. Its just SO much easier to stick the artifact to a photo or certificate and have done with it, but there is something special about a well executed acrylic that does make it worthwhile when it succeeds. | |
