How has the technology changed within the portable life support backpacks from Apollo to the International Space Station? Other than the SAFER units, they appear to be similar size. |

The ISS uses the EMU which was developed for the shuttle program. In fact, the same units are used. Other than being attached to the hard torso and use of more modern electronics, there isn't much difference in the function. Provide O2 via high pressure tanks, circulate water to remove body heat, evaporate water to dissipate heat, remove humidity by cooling, and remove CO2. One update is the use of a Metal Oxide Regenerable CO2 Removal System vs lithum hydroxide. | |
