Regarding a winch I have with lunar module related part numbers, it is about 7 1/2" long and about 5 1/2" high and the spool holds some stainless wire.

I think the part number for the whole unit is: MRR L24-0029 LDW420M53249-11. That is the red number on the end. On the other end it is stamped in white: LDW420-53254-3, which might be the part number for the spool and bracket unit.

The handle itself has a large number stamped or deeply recessed into it: LDW420 53255-3.

There is another red part number on the bottom of the section with the crank handle. It is rubbed and I cannot make out the whole number but it also clearly starts with "LDW."

One museum, with a lot of LM hardware, says "I think your LM part is for deploying the Scientific Instrument Pallet." Can anyone confirm this?

The LDW420 series is (I believe exclusively) ground support equipment (GSE). I have several examples, all of which are GSE. They range from mechanical parts to protective covers.

A winch may have been used to prepare a deployable part for flight. I could imagine such a device being used to fold the landing gear, for example. But at this time I don't have any other specific information.

I recently bought this winch and connected with barnstormer about it. If anyone has more clues, I am curious. This was the last lead on it...

One of the Apollo LEM Familiarization manuals had the following information which may, or my not, pertain to this item. But it seemed to fit:

Manually operated hoist. The manually operated hoist is portable, and operated with a handcrank. It is used in installation and removal of the descent stage propulsion tanks and engine. The ratio of the crank revolutions to cable travel is high, providing fine control of load position.
  • Part No, 420-63120
    420 series is handling Equipment.
  • Part No, 420-53200 is Cabin Equipment Installation fixture

The part numbers you mention in the Familiarization Manual would have the LDW prefix, so 420-53200 would be LDW420-53200. I have to agree that the description fits your part. Often the LM related part numbers skip around. So while your part number LDW420-53254-3 might appear to be associated with the LDW420-53200 cabin equipment installation fixture based on its number, they may just as likely not be associated.
