So as I several times saw this certification on eBay I'm quite curious about this small flag. I owned a flag some times ago but without any certification. It looks quite similar to the flown flag one. So I just want to know if anybody can tell me if this little flag could be one of the flown ones.  It measures 13x7.5 cm and is just printed on one side. If anyone got a clue about this, please fell free to comment. |

Unfortunately, like most (if not all) of the flags NASA flies on the space shuttle, the flags themselves are not marked in any way to identify a stand-alone example as flown. Even if your flag is the same size as one attached to a certificate, without an original presentation certifying it as flown, it would be impossible to state yours flew. |

So do I understand you right that this flag could have been flown aboard Columbia... Is there a matter of common knowledge how many of these were flown and how many were presented?Thanks Rob! |

I have learned the hard way (having Apollo flown flags without their "proof") that you absolutely need the original presentation to certify that it was flown. My initial guess is that your flag is NOT flown because the Shuttle flags are glued really well to the boards (while the Apollo ones weren't). But I would keep investigating to see if they ever sold these flags unflown and such. I hope this helps and good luck!

I would guess that there are vastly more UNFLOWN flags like these than flown. In any event, it would be inappropriate to even hint that such a flag might be flown, unless, as Robert indicated, it is accompanied by some sort of "official" documentation. These days, it is far too easy to gin up some sort of certificate or other "proof" that a particular item has flown. |

Case in point: I had two of those 16x24 patch displays, signed by the crews. (In addition to the patch, there was a montage of photos.) Problem was, one of them explicitly said the patch was flown, the other not. Even though they were addressed to the same individual, and the logical assumption is that both were flown patches, I could only sell the one that said it was flown as such. |

Well but they weren't glued before they were flown. Just after the mission STS-65 they were glued to the presentation cards. So due the procession of making these presentation cards it could be that some of these flags left.I got this flag from a NASA employee, that's the only detail what I remember. Anyway thanks for help and information! |
