I have in my collection shuttle food that was used for training, and I got the several items when I met astronaut Dr. Jeff Hoffman. I also have Salyut 7 food package, from Cosmonaut Alexandrov.

My questions:

  1. How rare is space food from a collector point of view?

  2. Is it considered NASA property and as such is very hard to get?

  3. Why it is so rare on eBay?

  4. What is the value of space food - flown and unflown?
Thanks for your insights.

I am curious about this too. I have over 20 flown MIR (mostly Russian and some US) food items.

I will add photos later.

I would imagine it is pretty rare as most of it was either eaten or has now perished.
Like anything though the flown is worth more than the unflown, but condition is also obviously a factor.

Some Russian black bread from the Soyuz era was up for auction last year (Regency Superior) with an estimate of $200 - $300.

Recently (I think was last week) someone sold on eBay six food samples more likely Gemini-Apollo era. The final price of it was close to $1,500.

Last year I got also on eBay some kind of packed food and doing some research I found pictures that has the same items, but not sure if it's real space food. I got both of them for less than $30 including shipping from Russia.

I don't collect space food, but following some research, here is an addendum to my previous post.

Earlier this year at auction some Gemini 'beef bits' with an estimate of $400-$600 did not sell. However, some Apollo potato salad sold for $1638.00

All times are CT (US)
