T O P I C R E V I E Wkeymichael1855A friend of mine and fellow cS member (moonguyron) is looking to sell his entire space exploration collection. Some highlights include 1:48 scale models (Mercury Redstone/Atlas, Titan, Saturn V, B52/X-15, B29-X-1), 1:20 scale F-1 and J-2 engines, 1:24 scale Lunar Module, 1:12 Mercury, 1:1 scale Apollo hand controllers, six moonwalker dioramas, various prints and signed Alan Bean artwork. Also included in the lot is an extensive collection of books — 32 books have been signed by key NASA figures, mostly astronauts, and are priced at $60 each. A "reference library" of 116 books is included for less than $20 per book. Ron is moving, and this is forcing him to sell his entire collection. You can find the collection on eBay here.In the listing you will find a complete list of all items, as well as a breakdown on the cost and discount applied. You will also find a link to pictures of the entire collection. If you have any questions, please let me know!!! bklyn55Don't you think your friend would be better off selling piecemeal here on cS? I may be wrong, but I'm not sure someone would shell out $35-$45k at one shot on eBay.Rocket ChrisWell that's over my budget, but I would like to buy the Apollo Translation Hand Controller? Would you sell it separately?moonguyronI simply do not have the time to sell items individually. Look over all the lists of what is offered and do the math. I believe one could make money on the collection by doing just that. Sell by the piece and make a profit or sell parts to pay for what you keep. Either way I priced it to make money for the buyer. Larry McGlynnExcellent collection. Would you consider placing the entire auction at an auction house? I am very sure that the seller's fee can be negotiated to a level that would benefit you and assist you in selling the whole collection. Rocket ChrisWell somehow I don't understand your answer but a simple yes or no would be enough.SpaceAholicI believe his point of view is that parting out some of the more desirable elements would make it challenging to dispose the rest of the collection.I'm not certain an auction house could realize the total estimate value (high end) sought by the seller.Larry McGlynnWhile Moonguyron might not sell the total collection as one lot, an auction house would be able to sell all the parts over time and they would handle all the costs of sale and shipping. I even bet that they would pick up the collection in it's entirety. If he is trying to leverage certain pieces to elevate the whole collection, then that will be a tough sell.I would wonder if Moonguyron has already attempted to contact any of the auction houses. DSeuss5490This set was offered previously here a few months back for a much lower price. When I inquired about purchasing I was told it was sold. moonguyronYou are correct that the collection was for sale on this site in mid June. I got a good response from three buyers. It took 2.5 months to find out the first buyer to respond would not complete the sale. I contacted the second buyer and he had just moved and could not complete the sale. I then redid the listing for eBay. Although the total reserve is higher now on eBay it is because the collection has been expanded. Also the discount percentage was reduced from an original 60% off to 40%. The current reserve with eBay states a 40% discount. Actually that is low. Look at the following items in the inventory for instance. #24 states I paid $5000 for Surveyor, and selling now for $2100. That's a 58% discount. #26 is a 64% discount ($1000 to $360) and #26 shows an actual 64% discount. So many items are actually selling for a much larger discount that 40%. Almost all the frames are 50 to 75% off my cost. I am also not charging for any labor for constructing all models I built myself. That's all astronaut dioramas, the F-1 engine, the Thunderbirds, and the 1:96th scale Saturn V. And finally SpaceAholic in his post above, summed it up perfectly. I have not ruled out the auction route but it is my last choice. Daugherty54Ron's a good man. I wish him the best in this sale. Boy there are some things that I sure would like to have! Good luck Ron!moonguyronThanks Dwight. That means a lot.
