Roadside astronaut: Towering 'Space City' statue stands on Route 66

Move over Houston... another U.S. town has declared itself "Space City" and has a new roadside attraction to support its claim.

The City of Weatherford, Oklahoma on Thursday (Aug. 22) held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its 30-foot-tall (9-meter) astronaut. The spacesuit-clad statue has a painted moonscape as the reflection in its helmet's visor, but it actually overlooks an iconic roadway celebrating its 100th year in 2026.

Well done, Weatherford.

I made my first visit in April this year and the museum was fantastic - highly recommended and a must-see for any Apollo buff.

Weatherford is a bit out of the way but it is well worth the effort. By the way, Jerry's Diner is the place to be for eats before/after - and it too is right on Route 66 (the original!).
