The New York Times' headline announcing his death on Monday (Dec. 8, 2025) sums it up best:
John Noble Wilford, Times Reporter Who Covered the Moon Landing, Dies at 92

He gave readers a comprehensive and lyrical account of the historic mission in 1969. His science coverage as a Pulitzer-winning journalist and an author took him around the world.

John Noble Wilford, a Pulitzer Prize-winning science reporter for The New York Times who covered America's first moon landing a half-century ago with the zeal of a fellow space traveler stepping onto the powdery lunar surface alongside Neil Armstrong, died on Monday at his home in Charlottesville, Va. He was 92.

His niece, Susan Tremblay, said the cause was prostate cancer.

Under the front-page banner headline "MEN WALK ON MOON," with a Houston dateline of July 21, 1969, Mr. Wilford gave readers an awe-inspiring and comprehensive account of Apollo 11's gentle touchdown and exploratory mission on the moon's arid Sea of Tranquillity after a 230,000-mile voyage from Earth...

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of John Noble Wilford. As a kid growing up in New York, we only got the newspaper on Sunday — and it was the New York Times. Starting at about age 4, my Dad would make a scrapbook of every article he wrote about the space program — it truly inspired me to pursue it as a career.

By the time I made it to NASA I was compelled to write him a letter to tell him how much his work affected my interest in science and space. Obviously that letter touched him as you see from his response here!

His book "We Reach the Moon" was one of the first I read about Project Apollo and it helped to ignite the passion which still burns inside me. Thank you Mr Wilford.
