Sam Neill, who starred in the 2000 Australian historical comedy-drama "The Dish" about the Apollo 11 moon landing and receiving its live television signal, died on Monday, July 13, 2026. He was 78.
In addition to the "The Dish," Neill played an astronaut in the 1997 science fiction horror film "Event Horizon" and hosted the 2001 BBC documentary six-episode series "Space." He is probably best remembered for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the "Jurassic Park" franchise.
Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent's Private Hospital for their incredible care.

I was very sorry to hear this news.
Sam Neill was born in Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland, and spent his first 7 years here before his family moved to New Zealand, so I always followed his career with interest. He always struck me as a very decent and likeable actor, which could be the description of his character in "The Dish."
Neill will probably be best remembered for his "Jurassic Park" films, but for anyone who has never seen "The Dish" I thoroughly recommend it as a warm, witty and fitting tribute to a great actor.
