It is pretty rare to celebrate 100th anniversaries in our hobby! In fact I have just two centennial covers in my collection: the birth of Georges Méliès (1961) and the death of Jules Verne (2005). And even these are only celebrated in their anniversary year and not by date.
Pictured above are my two covers. The first is a French FDC of a stamp celebrating the birth of Georges Méliès the filmmaker who created his movie Le Voyage dans la Lune which was released in 1902. He was born 8th December 1861, whereas the stamp was released on 11th March 1961. The second is another French FDC, this one commemorating the death of Jules Verne whose book De la Terre à la Lune was published in 1865. He died on 24th March 1905, whereas the stamp was issued on 28th May 2005. (The cover is signed by the stamp designer artist). I have an 125th anniversary of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky's birthday, but have yet to acquire a centennial cover. Similarly I have a 75th anniversary cover of Sergei Korolev's birth, and I'm also yet to find a centennial cover. Does anybody have any other centennial space covers? If so please show them. |
