The next issue of the Astophile is being put together at Minuteman Press. They are doing all the editing without cost to the Space Unit. The next issue includes a GREAT article on previously unknown Missile Mail and, of course, Artemis flight. |

Great news Tom about the next Astrophile featuring an article about an unknown missile mail and Artemis 1. Do you know off hand what that missile mail might be? |

In various articles and threads I read there crops up, mentioned in passing, the name Space Unit, but, a bit like the Illuminati, I cannot seem to find it.What was/is it? Does it still exist? Editor's note: Threads merged. |

Space Unit is the US space topic collector organization associated with the American Philatelic Society and American Topical Association. It is similar to the Great Britain based Astro Space Stamp Society and the Weltraum Philatelie based in Germany. |

How do you join? Do I need to be a member of the American Philatelic Society first? And do I also after that need to 'join' the ATA?Only all the links I follow up on the internet either end in a DNS error or my email administrator returns emails such as the one I sent to the contact listed on the ATA webpage ([email protected]). |

The website has not had updates in a long time. Can someone state the last time an Astrophile was received? It's also been a long time for me. Thank you. |

Not yet, we are working on how/what way to distribute the Astrophile going forward. Hope to get something out soon as we do have enough material to put the issue together. |

I look forward to the publication as soon as possible, if there is an electronic version of the sale, will solve the difficulties of space enthusiasts outside the United States. |

I didn't receive any Astrophile publications last year. Maybe others did? Please explain the 2024 dues if the Space Unit is continuing. Thank you. |

Am I the only person interested in the SU status? Are we supposed to send dues or not? Thank you. |

It's been a year since I first asked the question. I think the assumption everyone can make is the SPACE UNIT is no more. I'm really surprised at the lack of comments about this unfortunate issue. |

I read in the 2016 ASTROPHILE VOL. 57, NO. 2, #318 page 10 that the complete digital scan of the journal dating to the 1957 beginning was available for $99 and a 32GB USB drive. Is this still available? |

I'll add some information for those who find this thread on the ATA Space Unit, hopefully it helps. The ATA Space Unit (SU) still exists, Tom (yeknom-ecaps) is the President and can be reached for feedback on specific questions here on cS and other officers are still active in the community as well. There are no longer any dues that need to be paid. For now, collectSPACE is my de-facto way for reaching those involved with the SU. I'll say personally, there was hardly anything better than getting a fresh copy of the Astrophile in the mail, so I think its understood that many miss that. SU membership year to year was declining and several years ago the last printed issue of the Astrophile was mailed. Due to a few reasons that Tom has mentioned, the cost and effort of a print version was limiting so the SU will move to a digital version only. I believe the digital Astrophile is taking some time to setup as it still relies completely on the dedication of members to organize, edit, publish, including those willing to write articles on a planned regular basis. Writing and submitting articles is the life blood of any publication. Several SU members did scan the entire Astrophile archive, a herculean task and a labor of love, so the journal does exist digitally covering from 1957-2019 (this is the version I have) along with other SU publications on specific topics. I'm not aware if this archive can still be purchased in the same way as before since the SU has gone away from the printed journal. In the meantime several SU members, including myself, continue posting the Space Cover of the Week (SCOTW) here on cS. I'll be clear that this was not intended as a replacement for the journal but continues to provide an outlet for space philately journalism and interactive discussions alongside all the current event, space news, and historical perspectives posted around the cS forums. I get so much joy hearing from other collectors on my SCOTW posts and seeing covers from their collections. Many SU members still meet up in person at shows around the country, where we trade covers, tell stories, share knowledge, exhibit, and socialize. I know I could do a better job of making it known which shows I will be attending throughout the year, so I'll work to improve. Besides the historical preservation and research aspects, the primary reason I collect space covers is the social interactions and friendship that the SU has enabled over the years. I encourage anyone reading this to say hello to me at a show. I always have covers to trade, stories to tell, and freebies to give away. My attitude is if I see someone interacting with space covers during a show, I'll try to start up a friendly conversation, with the desire to respect people's wish to not engage in dialogue if they do not want to do so. Many of my closest acquaintances in the hobby have started this way and I encourage all to do the same. I can be reached through this forum, I'm excited to talk all things space, happy collecting to all !! Jeff SU # 5533 |
