Soyuz TMA-04M mission patch

Soyuz TMA-04M, which is scheduled to launch on March 29, 2012 (March 30 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome launch site in Kazakhstan), will fly Roscosmos cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin, together with NASA astronaut Joe Acaba, to the International Space Station (ISS).

Acaba, Padalka and Revin are three of six crew members comprising Expeditions 31 and 32.

The Soyuz TMA-04M emblem was the first Soyuz crew patch since December 2008 to be designed without drawing its inspiration from children's artwork. The design contest that led to the earlier student-influenced insignias ended with the previous Soyuz flight.

"We participated in designing it as a crew," Padalka commented in a recent interview with collectSPACE. "We had a group of people who designed it and they did a great job."

Dutch artist Luc van den Abeelen led the design work at the request of the crew.

The insignia depicts the Earth, crowned by the Russian exploration ship Nadezhda, captained by Ivan Fedorovich Kruzenshtern on the first Russian round-the-world expedition from 1803 to 1806.

"More than two centuries later, the Russian manned spacecraft Soyuz TMA-04M is in orbit around our home planet, on its way towards the International Space Station for continued exploration of space and on-orbit research," according to the emblem's official description.

The patch is framed by a ring, inspired by a compass rose, indicating the four cardinal directions, and bronze instruments like the sextant and the astrolabe.

Describing the emblem's use of a nautical motif, Padalka said that it was intended to evoke "traveling in deep space with an international crew."

I had a sneak preview of this last year when Luc last visited KSC. It is without a doubt one of the best crew patches ever!

Congratulations to Luc and everyone involved. Beautiful job!

Oh my Lord, that is just stunning. Drop dead gorgeous. You have really done a great job on this on. And I personally believe it is the best crew patch I have ever seen (no offense Tim, as you have produced some great ones yourself).

Can't wait to see it 'live' .

I was a bit worried when I heard the the children's artwork design contests had ended, as I thought these contests had brought real diversity and life to the Soyuz patches. which in my opinion was sorely needed.

Then I saw this. WOW!

I have to agree I think this is among the best patches ever. In a way I think it harkens back, in terms of design, to the glory days of Apollo.

I wonder though can the three dimensional elements be pulled off in embroidery?

Fantastic looking patch, one of the best I've seen for colors in some time (as good as STS-129). Cannot wait to get it.

I too wish to add my congratulations to the Soyuz Crew Graphics Support Group from the UK. Well done.

BEAUTIFUL!!! - I love it! My favourite things on patches are sailing vessels (and eagles). Looking at this patch I can feel there is a strong relationship between the the explorers who sailed over the oceans centuries ago and the astronauts and cosmonauts who fly to space in spaceships today. It's WONDERFUL, congratulations to the artist!

One of the best patch designs ever by any entity.

I just hope they will be obtainable to collectors and any of the general public that want one. Russian space patches are getting easier nowadays to find and I certainly hope that trend continues.

Thanks to this site I learn more all the time about this hobby of collecting patches, models, etc. Good info here.

Thanks for all the compliments, guys! This one really turned out the way I hoped, and I feel it is my best patch yet! Can't imagine doing something better very soon...

Keep an eye on these pages, as I plan to do something special with this art!

Cheers!

Always love the blending of nautical and space, past with future exploration. Never can go wrong in this area. Great design. Using a compass was brilliant.

Just the added touch of tilting the compass rose back at an angle was brilliant. This really enhances the three dimensional aspect of the design.

I don't have too many ISS or Soyuz patches in my collection, but I'll definitely be getting this one. Also looking forward to more news on your plans with this patch.

I received my TMA-04 patch and pin today. - Thank You, Jacques and congratualtions to spacepatches.nl for doing this wonderful patch. I am not a Russian space patches collecter, because I am more interested in NASA. The only Russian patches I have in my collection are a Russian ASTP Crew Patch, the Soyuz TMA-21 "Gagarin" Patch and the TMA-04 and this is one of the most beautiful space patches I have ever seen!

All times are CT (US)
