Crayola space-themed toys star in 'Planet McDonald's' Happy Meal

— Crayola and McDonald's are blasting off into the new year with a Happy Meal designed to send kids' imaginations into orbit.

The crayon brand and the fast food chain have teamed together for the first time on a global campaign to launch "Planet McDonald's," a collection of space-themed activity kits and toys that come with the restaurant's kids' meal. The collectibles and overall packaging art are not themed to a specific space program or historic mission, but include an original astronaut character and a retro-style sci-fi rocket.

"Crayola's mission has always been to inspire and empower creative exploration, discovery and self-expression in every child. This partnership with McDonald's brings that mission to life in a bold, unexpected way," Anna Roca, head of Global Partnerships at Crayola, said is a statement. "We're thrilled to collaborate with McDonald's to transform one of the most beloved family experiences — the Happy Meal — into an imaginative journey."

"Together, we're empowering kids to take a giant leap into creativity and fill the universe with color," said Roca.

The limited-edition Planet McDonald's Happy Meal is rolling out at participating McDonald's restaurants in more than 60 countries, including Canada and the United Kingdom, as well as throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia, with availability varying by market through March, while supplies last. (The companies did not announce plans to bring the theme to the United States, where currently, the Happy Meal is themed to the 70th anniversary of Disneyland.)

Among the Planet McDonald's toys and sets are rocket and planet-shaped spiral art activities; a coloring book, stencil and rubbing plates themed to an astronaut (or extraterrestrial); glow-in-the-dark stickers and an astronaut action figure. The Happy Meal also includes an interactive digital experience in which kids can scan their creations and watch them come to life in a space-themed environment "filled with opportunities to explore, learn and create even more," according to a press release announcing the promotion.

"At McDonald's, we're always looking for ways to create fun, surprising and engaging experiences that connect with families in meaningful ways," said Sheila Hamilton, senior director of global brand marketing from McDonald's. "This unique partnership with Crayola allows us to deliver personalized, interactive experiences that connect culture and creativity through a space-themed journey that puts kids in control of their own narrative."

The Happy Meal boxes and campaign advertising showcase illustrations created by children, "celebrating the authentic creativity that fuels the campaign," read the Dec. 26 announcement. The partnership also marks the first time that Crayola has become a supplier of colored pencils for McDonald's.

Crayola and McDonald's have partnered before, including on the "CosMc Crayola Happy Meal," which offered five different space-themed art kits in the late 1980s.

Crayola and McDonald's have also previously, separately worked with NASA to promote science education and deep space exploration. The U.S. space agency has taken part in the annual Crayola Creativity Week and the fast food chain has recently featured NASA's Artemis moon missions in both Monopoly and Happy Meal campaigns.
