— Timex has bridged the divide between sea and space with its latest tribute to the U.S. space program.
The American watch company has debuted a new timepiece that features NASA's retired logotype.
"We took our vintage-inspired diver-style watch and paired it with the iconic NASA logo. By land, sea or even space, this watch is the perfect companion for wherever your adventures take you," described Timex on its website.
The new Timex x NASA Navi watch has a stainless case, white dial, blue fabric strap and is emblazoned with the space agency's legacy logo — affectionately referred to as the "worm" — in red. Timex issued the $129 watch in celebration of this year's 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.
"Curiosity for space and a desire to understand something greater — the summer of 1969 marked a milestone with the Apollo 11 lunar landing. A bold move that changed history, we're celebrating the 50th anniversary [of] this historical event that shaped American history," the watchmaker wrote.
Though Timex watches did not fly to the moon, Apollo-era astronauts wore them during their pre-flight training and post-flight, after their splashdowns and recoveries, both as personal and service-issued timepieces. Later, NASA certified the Timex Ironman and Datalink models for use aboard space shuttle missions.
Even more recently, the company made custom Expedition-style watches for the members of NASA's astronaut corps featuring the current NASA insignia (known as the "meatball") on the dial. The watches, which have been seen with black and white faces, were not approved for official use on board missions but some crew members did fly them to the International Space Station in addition to their issued chronographs.
The new NASA Navi model, which is for sale to the public, is Timex's second nod to space exploration this year. In August, the company released a collection of wristwatches featuring NASA's safety and science education mascot, Snoopy. The Peanuts comic strip dog ("the first beagle on the moon") appeared on the watches' dials carrying the American flag, standing on the moon and floating in space.
In addition to featuring the worm logo, the new Timex NASA Navi watch has a 24-hour display and is water resistant to 100 meters (328 feet).
