Voyager Golden Record inspires Retro 51 x Goldspot Pens rollerball
July 1, 2026 — You can now record your thoughts with a limited edition tribute to one of humanity's most distant objects ever made.
Retro 51 and Goldspot Pens have launched the Voyager Golden Record Tornado, a collectible writing instrument. The rollerball pen's acid-etched brass barrel is adorned with the diagrams from NASA's two 12-inch gold-plated, copper records, awaiting their discovery by extraterrestrial, intelligent life.
"In 1977, the Earth sent a 'message in a bottle' to the cosmos," reads Goldspot's description of the $76 pen. "Inspired by this cosmic mix tape floating in outer space, Retro 51 x Goldspot Pens proudly introduce the 'Voyager Golden Record' rollerball pen."
Launched 16 days apart, the two Voyager probes first flew by and explored the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) before continuing beyond the heliopause into the interstellar medium. Although limited by power and their distance (billions of miles), the spacecraft continue to send back signals to Earth.
Led by astronomer Carl Sagan and his wife Ann Druyan, the Golden Records were designed to communicate to possible space-faring civilizations something about the diversity of life and the culture on Earth. The identical records held greetings in 59 languages, 115 images, the sounds of our planet and 27 pieces from the world's musical traditions.
To protect the records as they traveled through space, they each have a cover etched with diagrams providing instructions on how to play back the audio and visual content on the disc, the origin of the record (in relation to the location of 14 pulsars) and a drawing of a hydrogen atom in its two lowest states to provide a time scale.
Reproductions of these same diagrams wrap around the barrel of the Voyager Golden Record Tornado, which also features stonewatched brass accents to complete the antique-look of the celestial time capsule. Capping off the pen's design, Retro 51 placed a golden record illustration on the shiny brass top disc.
Each of the 500 Voyager Golden Record Tornado pens comes packaged in a commemorative tube inscribed with the record's greetings in 55 languages. The limited edition number is engraved on the top ring.
Previously released, now sold out space-themed Retro 51 releases have included pens decorated to resemble the Mercury-Redstone, Gemini-Titan and Apollo-Saturn V rockets; astronaut pressure suits and the Hubble Space Telescope. The company also made limited edition pens for the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation and a space shuttle Discovery Tornado under a partnership with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. |
