Breitling offers new watch as tribute to Mercury astronaut's centenary
May 27, 2025 — A new limited-edition timepiece has been released as a tribute to the first Swiss-made watch to fly into space and the astronaut who wore it, on the occasion of his 100th birthday.
Breitling, the luxury brand known for its precision chronometers made for aviators, has introduced the "Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute Scott Carpenter Centenary." The $42,000 wristwatch has features inspired by the historic May 24, 1962, flight of the second American to launch into Earth orbit.
Carpenter, who was 37 at the time of his Mercury-Atlas 7 trip into space, was born on May 1, 1925, 100 years ago this month.
"Now, to mark the centenary of Scott Carpenter's birth, Breitling presents the Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute Scott Carpenter Centenary. Cased in platinum, it's a tribute to one of the great names in space exploration," Briefing's website reads about the new watch.
Carpenter, who died in 2013, was the first NASA astronaut to wear a watch into space, a one-of-a-kind Navitimer, that Breitling created at his request. Delivered just days before his launch, it featured a wider bezel for gloved hands, a stretch-metal bracelet to fit over his pressure suit and a 24-hour dial.
The new Navitimer Cosmonaute, of which only 50 have been made, reproduces the look of Carpenter's watch but with a deep blue dial to evoke the color of Earth as seen from space and a crisp white slide rule recalling the planet's swirling cloud cover (the original was black and white). Breitling extends the same blue onto the watch's alligator-leather strap, which is secured with a white-gold folding clasp.
The bridge, which holds the watch's moving parts in place, is engraved with the logo from Carpenter's "Aurora 7" Mercury spacecraft and a representation of the capsule itself, as well as is inscribed "Carpenter," "Mercury 7" and "3 Orbits Around The Earth." The caseback is further etched "Scott Carpenter Centenary 1925-2025," "First Swiss Wristwatch In Space" and "One Of 50."
The 41mm watch comes packaged in a wooden display box marked with the date of the 1962 mission and is accompanied by a replica of Carpenter's name badge.
"A timepiece that connects Earth and orbit — built for the bold, then and now," wrote Breitling.
Carpenter's original Navitimer was damaged by saltwater after he splashed down from space. He shipped it back to Breitling for repair, but it went missing and was not discovered again until 2022, when it was found in the Breitling family archives.
The new Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute Scott Carpenter Centenary is the third model of the original Swiss space watch to be offered by Breitling after two anniversary-timed replicas in 2012 and 2022. |
