The STS-107 Official Flight Kit (OFK)


Fire balls, sleeping astronauts, kidney stones, and spongelike rocks are all part of the mix of experiments and research that will occupy the crew of STS-107 aboard Columbia. The flight serves as a bridge from research conducted aboard the Space Shuttle in the 1980s and '90s and the long-term work planned for the International Space Station when it is completed.

STS-107 also marks the first flight of an Israeli astronaut, Ilan Ramon, and the second mission for India's first female astronaut, Kalpana Chawla. Rounding out the crew are Commander Rick Husband, Pilot William McCool, and Mission Specialists David Brown, Michael Anderson, and Laurel Clark.

As with each shuttle mission, the STS-107 crew is flying their choice of souvenirs and mementos, assembled together as the Official Flight Kit (OFK) and stowed inside a middeck locker for the duration of the flight.

In addition to the usual patches and medallions, the STS-107 OFK manifest (as presented below) includes an artist's drawing on loan from the Yad Vashem Memorial in Jerusalem, Israel. Titled "Moon Landscape", it depicts the Earth from the Moon as imagined by 14 year old Holocaust victim Petr Ginz.
