heng44 | Half a century ago this week, the Apollo 11 spacecraft was undergoing tests in the altitude chamber at the Kennedy Space Center. The photo shows pad leader Guenter Wendt during a run with backup crewmembers Jim Lovell, Bill Anders and Fred Haise. |
carmelo | How was the odor of a new Apollo capsule? Who knows! |
Tom | Ed... great photo! I've been looking for a photo of the three Apollo 11 back-up crew members. Do you have one you can post? Thank you! |
Jonnyed | Guenter's bow tie is a nice touch. |
Kevmac | It almost looks like Lovell's suit has a mission patch on the usual upper left chest area. Anyone else think that's what it is? Is there any reason a back-up crew member would have a suit with a patch at this point in the program? Just curious. |
David C | I presume that's Anders, and it looks like one to me. Perhaps his Apollo 8 suit? |
Ian Limbrey | Another great photo Ed which I don't believe I have seen before. Guenter looks very smart with his bow tie and I guess you have to be probably dressed when you are dealing with three guys wearing rather 'smart suits'. |

As other photos show, none of the backup crew wore a mission patch during this test. |

Unfortunately not. I'm still looking for one. |
Jonnyed | The corded device that Wendt is wearing is a microphone, correct? This is how he communicates with the astronauts during the run-through? Or is this device something else? Also, looks like the crew have the Omega Speedmasters on. |
randy | I see that he's wearing a bow tie in this picture. He was also sporting a bow tie when I had the privilege of meeting him at the AHOF ceremony in 2001. Just an extra touch of class. |

Yes the corded device is a microphone. The astronauts are wearing a pressure helmet and a headset. This would muffle the outside sounds. Additionally, the sound of flowing air inside the pressure helmet would further hinder hearing sounds outside.Communications via the comms would be much easier than without. There is a video of James Burke doffing an Apollo spacesuit, during which you can notice the audio of the sounds within the helmet when it is sealed, versus when it is removed. |
