heng44 | Apollo 14 backup lunar module pilot Joe Engle poses in the suit room at the Kennedy Space Center with his children, 8-year-old Jon and 11-year-old Laurie. |
Kite | Lovely photo Ed. What a let down for him when he lost his place on Apollo 17 but reacted like the true professional that he is with dignity. He still had a stellar career what with the X-15 and Space Shuttle programmes. Number one on my list of astronauts that I haven't met but would really love to. |
Kite | Further to above I seem to remember reading that his biggest disappointment was telling his children that he wouldn't be going to the Moon. |
Mike Dixon | How lucky were those youngsters ... something I imagine they'll remember even if they are now in their 50s. Sweet photo Ed. |
Ronpur | Great photo! Those spacesuit look pretty accurate! |
LM-12 | The Apollo 9 LMP flight suit #015 was re-used as the Apollo 14 BLMP training suit. So Joe Engle might be wearing Rusty Schweickart's EVA suit in the photo. |
328KF | Engle is one of the most personable guys you could ever meet. He makes total strangers feel like old friends. I've been to several of his X-15 and shuttle presentations, where he is great with signing. The day they unveiled SpaceShipOne at the Smithsonian, I spotted him in the crowd smiling while Rutan and Paul Allen were on stage. A real class act. |
Philip | Superb Ed... I believe this is the kind of image we might expect in the book: "Moonshots and Snapshots of Project Apollo: A Rare Photographic History"? |
Jonnyed | What is the machine that they are standing in front of? |
mach3valkyrie | I think it's for checking suit integrity, pressures, etc. |
astro-nut | Awesome photo! Still wish that Joe could of have walked on the Moon with Gene on Apollo 17. Just wish that Joe would write a book about his Air Force and NASA careers. |
