heng44 | Back when the Space Shuttle was still a promise: Fred Haise is training in the Shuttle Mission Simulator in early 1977 for the first free flight of the Enterprise, planned for later that year. Ed Hengeveld |
APG85 | Great shot. Always wished he had flown a Shuttle in space... |
randy | The cabin repress valve is where? |
ilbasso | What an amazing man. He's sitting here in the commander's seat less than 4 years after surviving an airplane crash and suffering burns over 65% of his body. I say we find a way to send Freddo back to the Moon! |
bwhite1976 | Oh to have seen his name on one of the first Shuttle misson patches. What a great picture and reminder of his contribution to the shuttle program. |

Would be a fitting option for all the Apollo heroes. |
Philip | Did the pilots really wear that old kind of helmet during the ALT flights? |
Lou Chinal | Phil, not only the helmet check out the "steam gages" on the instrument panel and the kneeboard too. |

During the actual ALT flight the helmets were a bit more modern. Check our Photo of the Week 161. |

Hey..watch it! I still use that identical type of knee board. |
astro-nut | Another great photo. Thank you for sharing these great photos with us. Back when the Space Shuttle Program was young. Any photos of Gordon Fullerton, Joe Engle and Dick Truly training for their ALT flights? |
ea757grrl | A similar picture is in Robert Powers' book "Shuttle," and the thought of Haise as a Shuttle commander has long intrigued me and will forever be a case of "oh, what might have been." Fred Haise is just plain made of awesome. |
